Country's first "National Scholarship Portal Mobile App" launched

  • Union Minister for Minority Affairs, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi on September 13, 2018 launched the country's first "National Scholarship Portal Mobile App" (NSP Mobile App)
  • National Scholarship Portal Mobile App"
    • NSP Mobile App will ensure a smooth, accessible and hassle-free scholarship system for students from poor and weaker sections. 
    • All the scholarships are being given directly into bank accounts of the needy students under Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mode through the National Scholarship Portal.
    • The app ensures that there is no scope for duplication and leakage. 
    • It will prove beneficial for students and will help in strengthening a transparent mechanism for the scholarships.

Justice Ranjan Gogoi to be next Chief Justice of India

  • President Ram Nath Kovind on 13 Sept appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the next Chief Justice of India.
  • Justice Gogoi will assume office on October 3, 2018, as the 46th Chief Justice of India.
  • His tenure will end in November 2019.
  • Who is appointed as CJI?
    • According to the Memorandum of Procedure, which governs the appointment of members of the higher judiciary, “appointment to the office of the Chief Justice of India should be of the senior-most judge of the Supreme Court considered fit to hold the office”.

EU Parliament votes to punish Hungary for breaching democratic norms

  • European Union legislators voted in favour of launching punitive action against the Hungarian government for undermining democratic rules. 
  • It is the first such vote against a member state under EU rules.
  • Why Hungary is being punished?
    • Since sweeping to power in 2010, Prime Minister of Hungry Viktor Orban has pressured courts, media, and non-governmental groups, as well as refusing to take in asylum seekers arriving in Europe.
    • Orban is against the liberal immigration policy and has taken a tough stand and almost halted the immigration after the Syrian refugee crisis in 2014.
    • Hungary is a part of European Union which consists of 28 countries.

More than 18 million new cases of cancer expected in 2018: UN's IARC

  • More than 18 million new cases of cancer are expected this year and it is estimated that 9.6 million people will die from various forms of the disease in 2018, according to UN’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC).
  • IARC is a specialized body of World Health Organization.
  • Highlights:
    • According to IARC, cancer is a growing as global health threat.
    • One in five men and one in six women worldwide develop cancer during their lifetime, and one in eight men and one in 11 women die from it.
    • In India, the number of new cancer cases in 2018 among male and female and in all ages stood at 1,157,294. Of this, 587,249 were women diagnosed with cancer.
    • The risk of developing cancer before the age of 75 years was 9.81 per cent for males and 9.42 per cent for females. 
    • The report said that globally the increasing cancer burden is due to several factors, including population growth and ageing as well as the changing prevalence of certain causes of cancer linked to social and economic development.
    • Lung cancer is a leading cause of death for both men and women and is the leading cause of cancer death in women in 28 countries
    • The highest incidence rates of this form of the disease in women are in North America, Northern and Western Europe – notably Denmark and the Netherlands – China, and Australia and New Zealand; with Hungary topping the list.
  • Cancer:
    • Cancer can start any place in the body. It starts when cells grow out of control and crowd out normal cells.
    • This makes it hard for the body to work the way it should.
    • Cancer is not just one disease.
    • There are many types of cancer. Cancer can start in the lungs, the breast, the colon, or even in the blood.
    • Cancers are alike in some ways, but they are different in the ways they grow and spread.

Bihar govt approves scheme to give Rs 1 lakh interim relief to mob violence victim

  • The Bihar government approved a scheme for providing interim relief of Rs 1lakh to those affected by mob violence besides speedy trial of such cases.
  • The scheme provides for an interim relief of Rs one lakh which would be made available to victims of mob violence within a month of the incident.
  • Besides, all such cases will be heard at fast track courts which would ensure completion of trial within six months and a final compensation amount, inclusive of the interim relief, would be paid thereupon.

Udhayveer Singh wins Gold Medal in World Shooting Championship

  • Sixteen year old Udhayveer Singh has won an individual Gold Medal in Junior Men's 25 metre pistol event in the World Shooting Championships in South Korea.
  • India are placed fourth in the medals tally with 9 Gold, 8 Silver and seven bronze medals for a total of 24. 
  • The tally is India's best performance in International Shooting Sport Federation's showpiece.

Digital commerce to touch Rs 2.37 lakh cr by Dec 2018: IAMA

  • Digital commerce in India is expected to reach Rs 2.37 lakh crore by December 2018, driven by strong growth in segments like travel, e-commerce and utility services, according to Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI).
  • Highlights of the report:
    • As per the report, the online travel industry accounted for 54 per cent share (Rs 1.10 lakh crore) of the digital commerce market.
    • Within the travel category, domestic air ticket and railways booking continued to be among top contributors, while bus/cab booking contributed about Rs 5,174 crore 
    • Other online service market -- which includes online bookings done for entertainment, online grocery and online food delivery -- reached close to Rs 6,060 crore. 
    • With the prices of mobile internet seeing a rapid drop, there has been a significant increase in the number of online users and the level of online activity and engagement. 

40th International Day for South-South Cooperation

  • To highlight the importance of South-South Cooperation, the General Assembly in its resolution 58/220 decided to observe the United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation on 12 September every year.
  • The date commemorates the adoption in 1978 of the "Buenos Aires Plan of Action for Promoting and Implementing Technical Cooperation among Developing Countries (BAPA)" by 138 Member States. 
  • The United Nations Day for South-South Cooperation celebrates the economic, social and political developments made in recent years by regions and countries in the south and highlights UN's efforts to work on technical cooperation among developing countries.
  • South-South simply means cooperation between developing countries.

Economist Vijay Shankar Vyas passes away

  • Padma Bhushan awardee and noted agricultural economist Vijay Shankar Vyas passed away on 13 September.
  • Vijay Shankar Vyas:
    • He had held several professional and leadership positions in national and international organizations. 
    • The economist was the director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Jaipur.
    • The economist was the director of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, and the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), Jaipur.
    • He was also a senior advisor in the World Bank’s agriculture and rural development department.

Vibha Padalkar is new CEO of HDFC Life

  • HDFC Life on 12 Sept named its chief financial officer and executive director Vibha Padalkar as the new managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) for 3 years.
  • After listing on the exchanges in November 2017, HDFC Life is one of the most valuable private life insurers and the largest in the private sector by new business premium collection.
  • Vibha Padalkar:
    • A member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, Padalkar joined HDFC Life in August 2008.
    • She is also a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
    • She was recently honoured with the ‘CA CFO – Insurance Sector’ award by the ICAI.
