70th Army Day being celebrated today

  • The 70th Army Day is being celebrated today (15 January 2018). The day marks the taking over of the Indian Army by the first Indian Commander-in-Chief, Field Marshal KM Cariappa, on 15th January 1948.
  • The day is celebrated to pay homage and salute to the courageous and brave Indian soldiers who have been sacrificing their lives for protecting the country. Every year 15 January is celebrated as the Army Day.
  • On the occasion, General Bipin Rawat said that Indian Army's bilateral engagements with other armies of the world are increasing and so is military diplomacy gaining ground. He will also present gallantry awards.

Delhi’s Teen Murti Chowk named after Israeli city Haifa

  • The historic Teen Murti Chowk has been renamed after the Israeli City Haifa, a year after the plan was put on hold by the NDMC.  The idea of renaming Teen Murti road and chowk after Haifa was proposed in the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) council.
  • The Teen Murti Chowk will be renamed as Teen Murti Haifa Chowk, in the centenary year of the Battle for Haifa as a symbol of friendship between the people of India and Israel.
  • Teen Murti Chowk: The Teen Murti Chowk was named to mark the role of the three cavalry regiments. But no one knows this today. The three bronze statues at Teen Murti represent the Hyderabad, Jodhpur and Mysore Lancers who were part of the 15 Imperial Service Cavalry Brigade.

India, Britain sign agreements on illegal migrants' return & sharing criminal records

  • India and Britain have signed two agreements on illegal Indian migrants’ return and sharing criminal records and intelligence.
  • The development comes close on heels of India seeking Britain’s help in early extradition of liquor tycoon Vijay Mallya from Britain to face the law at home in connection with cases of fraud and money laundering amounting to around  9,000 crore rupees.
  • The new deals reflect increased co-operation between the two countries, which already enjoy a close relationship.
  • MoU on criminal records exchange will lead to British and Indian law enforcement bodies sharing criminal records information and assist the police in protecting the public from known criminals. It will also allow the courts in both countries to access more information to support tougher sentencing decisions.

Sri Lanka reimposes ban on women buying alcohol

  • Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered to reimpose ban on women buying alcohol or working in places that sell or manufacture liquor.
  • The 1979 law prohibiting the sale of any type of alcohol to women was overturned in an effort to restore gender neutrality. However, the move was opposed by hardline sections of the majority-Buddhist nation forcing the President to reimpose the ban.
  • The ban on women buying liquor was likely originally imposed in 1979 to appease the conservative Buddhist hierarchy at the time.

Sex ratio at birth in Haryana rises to 914 girls per 1000 boys

  • The sex ratio at birth (SRB) in Haryana has increased to 914 girls per 1,000 boys. Earlier in 2015 the SRB was 871 girls for 1000 boys and in 2016, it was 900 girls for 1000 boys.
  • The state witnessed a remarkable increase of 82 points in sex ratio at birth during the last five years, with nine districts improving the SRB by 100 or more points.
  • SRB rates in districts of Haryana: Panipat with the SRB of 945 topped the list, followed by Yamuna Nagar at 943 which is close to 950, considered ideal from the perspective of public health.
  • The launch of the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padho' campaign, the government had embarked upon a multi-pronged drive to rectify the skewed sex ratio in Haryana.

Rishabh Pant blasts fastest century by an Indian in T20

  • Rishabh Pant created history when he slammed the fastest T20 century by an Indian batsman, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy. Pant remained unbeaten on 116 off 38 balls
  • He brought up his hundred in just 32 balls at a strike rate of more than 300. He is now second in the list of those with the fastest century in the history of T20 cricket (only behind Chris Gayle’s 30.

EOR programme for Mangala-Bhagyam-Aishwarya oilfields inaugurated

  • Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan inaugurated an Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) programme for Mangala-Bhagyam-Aishwarya (MBA) fields in Barmer.
  • Aim: The programme will help the company in achieving the production target of 5 lakh barrels oil per day (BOPD) from the Barmer oil fields.
  • Production will go up to 3 lakh BOPD based on the capital investment plan of Rs 12,000 crore that has already been initiated and the production will further go up to 5 lakh BOPD with full investment plan of over Rs 37,000 crore over next few years.

Armed Forces Veteran Day observed on January 14

  • Former Army chief General Shankar Roy Chowdhury and Air Chief Marshal (retd) Arup Raha today paid homage to those who made supreme sacrifice in the line of duty, marking the second Armed Forces Veterans' Day.
  • Lieutenant General Abhay Krishna, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief (GOC-in-C), Eastern Command, was the senior most serving officer to pay tributes at the wreath laying ceremony at Vijay Smarak, Fort William. The day is celebrated as a mark of respect and recognition of the services rendered by Field Marshal K.
  • The Indian Army is also celebrating 2018 as 'The Year of Disabled Soldier in the Line of Duty.

Hyderabad Hunters win third edition of Premier Badminton League

  • Hyderabad Hunters overcame a fighting Bengaluru Blasters to become the champions of the third Premier Badminton League at the Gachibowli Indoor Stadium on 15 January 2018.
  • The key player for the Blasters was reigning world champion Viktor Axelsen, who beat Bengaluru’s Sai Praneeth in the trump match.

Europe dominate singles to retain EurAsia Cup golf tournament

  • Team Europe finally found their rhythm as they steamrolled Team Asia in the singles to win the EurAsia Cup golf tournament for the second time in three editions.
  • Winning eight singles and halving another one, Europe emerged 8 ½ to 3 ½ winners in singles to complete a 14-10 triumph at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club.
  • For Europe, the unbeaten players were Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrell Hatton, who won all three matches. Europe kept piling on the wins, through Henrik Stenson, Bernd Wiesberger and Alex Levy. It was Thomas Pieters who delivered the winning point and then Tyrell Hatton beat Anirban Lahiri for the eighth singles win for Europe.
