Prime Minister laid foundation stone for Purvanchal Expressway

  • Indian PM Narednra Modi laid the foundation of Rs. 23000 Cr Poorvanchal Highway Project in UP.
  • The 340 KM Purvanchal Expressway will connect Eastern UP less developed districts such as Azamgarh, Mau, Gazipur, Faizabad, Sultanpur, Ambdekar Nagar and Amethi.
  • It will be a six lane highway expandeable to 8 lane.
  • Purvanchal is a geographic region of north India which comprises of eastern end of UP, and western end of Bihar.

Prime Minister dedicates Bansagar Canal Project to nation

  • Indian PM inaugurated the Bansagar Canal Project in Mirzapur, Uttar Pradesh.
  • Bansagar Canal Project is joint venture of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Bihar government.
  • 171 KM long canal will help 1.70 lakh farmers.
  • Bansagar or Ban Sagar Dam is a multipurpose river Valley Project on Sone River situated in the Ganges Basin in Madhya Pradesh with both irrigation and 435 MW of hydroelectric power generation.

University of Houston signs MoU with Indian Institute of Petroleum Energy

  • University of Houston (USA) and Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the aim of enriching scientific knowledge through joint research.
  • The MoU also covers possible student exchanges for short-term visits and learning, joint research projects, and joint academic events and activities.
  • IIPE, which was initiated by the Indian Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, was established in 2016 in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

India inaugurates its largest visa centre in Bangladesh

  • India inaugurated its largest visa centre in the world in Dhaka to reduce the waiting time for applicants.
  • Bangladeshis constitute one of the largest number of visitors from a single country.

Rakesh Sinha among four nominated to Rajya Sabha

  • Classical dancer Sonal Mansingh and columnist Rakesh Sinha are among the four persons nominated by the President to the Rajya Sabha on Saturday. 
  • The new nominations have been made to fill the vacancies caused due to the retirement of nominated members Sachin Tendulkar, Rekha, Anu Aga and K Parasaran.
  • Under Article 80 of the Constitution, the President can nominate 12 members to the Rajya Sabha "from amongst persons who have special knowledge or practical experience in respect of such matters as literature, science, art and social service.
  • The nominated members have six-year term.

Haiti PM Jack Guy Lafontant resigns after days of protests

  • The Prime Minister of Haiti, Jack Guy Lafontant, has resigned after days of violent protests against fuel price rises.
  • Background:
  • In February 2017, the country signed an agreement with the International Monetary Fund to carry out structural reforms to promote growth. The IMF argued getting rid of the fuel subsidies would free up cash for other things like education, health and job creation.
  • The unrest started after the government unveiled a proposal to eliminate fuel subsidies which in turn would have hiked fuel prices: 38 percent for gasoline, 47 percent for diesel and 51 percent for kerosene.
  • Lafontant, who took office in February 2017, later announced the plan would not go ahead, but protesters still demanded his resignation.

UNSC imposes arms embargo on South Sudan

  • The United Nation Security Council has imposed an armed embargo on South Sudan.
  • Background:
  • The civil war in South Sudan started in 2013, two years after it gained independence from Sudan, when President Salva Kiir accused his then-deputy Riek Machar of plotting a coup.
  • Over the years, the conflict has expanded and fighting has intensified with more than a dozen warring factions.
  • Seven million South Sudanese, more than half of the population, will need food aid in 2018, according to the UN.

RBI directs to incorporate purchaser’s name on payment instrumentalities

  • In a series of measures taken by the Reserve Bank of India to make banking instruments safer and stronger, the central bank has made it mandatory to mention the name of a purchaser on the face of a demand draft (DD) at a bank branch.
  • In the current form, only the name of a person in whose favour a DD is to be prepared is mentioned on it.
  • A total of 5,152 cases of fraud involving over Rs 28,459 crore were reported in various banks of the country in the past year from April 2017 to March 1, 2018.

Angelique Kerber wins women's singles of Wimbledon 2018

  • Angelique Kerber became the first German woman to win Wimbledon for 22 years as the 11th seed shattered Serena Williams' bid for Grand Slam history with a shock 6-3, 6-3 victory in Saturday's final.
  • Kerber avenged her defeat against Serena in the 2016 Wimbledon title match, overwhelming the seven-time champion with a stunning 65-minute upset on Centre Court.

MCA constituted a 10-Member Committee to review offences under Companies Act, 2013

  • The Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) has constituted a 10 Member Committee, headed by the Secretary of Ministry of Corporate Affairs Mr Injeti Srinivas, for review of the penal provisions in the Companies Act, 2013.
  • It has been setup to examine ‘de-criminalisation’ of certain offences. The Committee shall submit its report within thirty days to the Central Government for consideration of its recommendations.
  • Mr Piyush Goyal is the Minister of Corporate Affairs.
