France wins FIFA World Cup 2018 (Also mention third winner + host of 2022 World Cup + Golden Boot)


  • France won the World Cup for the second time by ending battling Croatia`s dream of a first title with a 4-2 victory in one of the most entertaining and action-packed finals for decades.
  • France led 2-1 at halftime after a Mario Mandzukic own goal and an Antoine Griezmann VAR penalty, with Ivan Perisic briefly bringing first-time finalists Croatia level.
  • Quick fire strikes by Paul Pogba and Kylian Mbappe midway through the second half put France on course for the title but Mandzukic was gifted a goal by French keeper Hugo Lloris to set up a nervous last 20 minutes.
  • The victory means that Didier Deschamps, captain of the 1998 side, becomes the third man to win the World Cup as player and coach after Brazil`s Mario Zagallo and Germany`s Franz Beckenbauer.
  • It was the highest-scoring final since England beat West Germany 4-2 after extra-time in 1966 and the highest in normal time since Brazil beat Sweden 5-2, 60 years ago.


India becomes Vice Chair of Asia Pacific Region of World Customs Organisation


  • India has become the vice-chair (regional head) of the Asia Pacific region of the World Customs Organisation (WCO) for a period of two years to June, 2020,
  • The organisation has divided its membership into six regions. Each of the regions is represented by an elected vice-chairperson to the WCO council.
  • To mark the assumption of vice chair, an event is being organised here by the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) in partnership with industry body CII.
  • It will witness participation of customs delegates from 33 countries of the Asia-Pacific Region, customs officers from different ports in India.
  • WCO represents 182 customs administrations across the globe that collectively process approximately 98 per cent of world trade.

  • The World Customs Organization (WCO) is an intergovernmental organization headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. The WCO is noted for its work in areas covering the development of international conventions, instruments, and tools on topics such as commodity classification, valuation, rules of origin, collection of customs revenue.


India-Bangladesh signs Revised Travel Arrangement (RTA)-2018


  • Home Minister Rajnath Singh and his Bangladeshi counterpart chair meeting in Dhaka; During the meeting India and Bangladesh signed the Revised Travel Arrangement (RTA)-2018.
  • Home Minister Rajnath Singh co-chaired India-Bangladesh Home Minister.
  • The Home Minister also inaugurated a new integrated state-of-the-art Indian Visa Application Centre at Jamuna Future Park in Dhaka.
  • Home minister Rajnath Singh along with his Bangladesh counterpart opened the centre, the largest Indian visa centre in the world, by handing over passports with Indian visa to a couple of visa applicants.


Novak Djokovic lifts his fourth Wimbledon Men's Singles title


  • Novak Djokovic has lifted his fourth Wimbledon Men's Singles title. In the final in London, he defeated South Africa's Kevin Anderson in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, 7-6.  The Serbian had earlier won the coveted title in 2011, 2014 and 2015. 
  • With his 13th career Grand Slam crown, World Number 21 Djokovic took his Slam total to within one of Pete Sampras and just four behind the 17 of Rafael Nadal who he defeated in the semi-finals.
  • Anderson, the eighth seed, was the first South African in the final in 97 years and was bidding to become the first man from his country to be crowned Wimbledon champion. However, he had spent 21 hours on court getting to the final and that marathon effort came back to haunt him at the worst possible time.

Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin to hold first summit at Helsinki in Finland


  • United States President Donald Trump and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin will hold their first one-on-one meeting in the midst of various tensions.
  • Coming directly from Scotland after his visit to Britain, Trump will hold talks with Putin with only translators. The two presidents will later hold a joint press conference to introduce the results of their meeting.
  • The Russian President will arrive in Helsinki after he watched the FIFA World Cup final between France and Croatia in Moscow.
  • The meeting came in the midst of tensions between Russia and the West in issues concerning Iran, Syria and Crimea, as well as the unprecedented alienation between the US and its trans--Atlantic allies over trade and defense.


EU, ASEAN agree to restart process of establishing FTA between them


  • EU, ASEAN agree to restart process of establishing FTA between them: Singapore PM Lee Hsien Loong
  • Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has said, the European Union (EU) and ASEAN have agreed to restart the process of establishing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between them.  
  • Singapore hopes to establish a framework to identify areas with potential to work out deals.
  • Mr. Lee was speaking to the media after attending France’s National Day Parade in Paris, where he was the guest of honour.
  • On July 14 every year, France holds a military parade in Paris to commemorate the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris in 1789, and the beginning of the French Revolution. Every year, France invites a country to participate in its National Day Parade.



Ravi Shankar Prasad unveils Goa IT Policy 2018


  • Union minister for electronics and IT and law and justice Ravi Shankar Prasad unveiled the Goa IT Policy 2018 at the Inox complex in Panaji on the final day of Goa IT Day celebrations.
  • Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar was also present on the occasion.
  • Stressing on digital skilling and assuring central support, Mr Prasad announced that Goa will soon have a National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology centre.
  • The programme has created a new ecosystem of e-scholarships, digital lockers, e-Visas and most importantly, digital delivery of services. He also mentioned the contribution of various apps and schemes launched by the central government in bringing people and services to a digital platform.


Japanese Nozomi Okuhara beats PV Sindhu to wins Thailand Open of Badminton


  • India's star shuttler PV Sindhu, seeded second, suffered a 15-21, 18-21 defeat to fourth seed Nozomi Okuhara of Japan in straight games inside 50 minutes to settle for runners-up spot in the Thailand Open at the Nimibutr Stadium in Bangkok.
  • Sindhu was outplayed in the first game in 20 minutes as the World No.3 made too many unforced errors.


'An Uncertain Glory: India and its Contradictions' by Amartya Sen


  • Amartya Sen and Dreze’s have written a book named an Uncertain Glory: India and its Contradictions is the argument that economic growth is meaningless without redistribution of its benefits to the underprivileged.
  • Eminent economist Amartya Sen has said that despite being a fastest growing economy, India has taken a “quantum jump in the wrong direction” since 2014, and because of the backward movement, it is now the second worst in the region.

Bhushan Steel appoints T V Narendran as chairman


  • Bhushan Steel, acquired by Tata Steel under corporate resolution process, said that its board had approved the appointment of T.V. Narendran as chairman and non-executive, additional director of the company.
  • Mr. Narendran is the CEO & MD of Tata Steel. A new management team has been put into place at Bhushan Steel after it was acquired by Tata Steel via the insolvency and bankruptcy process.


Rishi Narain wins All India Seniors Golf Championship


  • Former Asian Games gold medallist Rishi Narain won the Indian Golf Union’s 48th annual All India Seniors Golf Championship in a sudden death shootout against thee-time senior winner Gangesh Khaitan.
  • Cricket legend Kapil Dev finished in third place at the Jaypee Greens Golf Resort.
  • In seniors golf the US Professional Tour stages around 30 tournaments every year with Rs 10 crore prize money every tournament and then there are tours in Europe, Japan and Asia.
  • A record entry of 120 senior golfers (aged 50 years and above) from all over India competed in the event.
