  • Where MoU signed: 21st two-day meeting of Pakistan-Iran Joint Border Commission in the port city of Gwadar in Balochistan province.
  • Pakistan shares a 900-kilometre-long border with Iran

India starts on implementation of motor pact with Bangladesh, Nepal

  • Union Minister of MORTH Nitin Gadkari announced that India has embarked on implementation of the BBIN motor pact with Bangladesh and Nepal.
  • What is BBIN: Bangladesh-Bhutan-India-Nepal set up under SAARC Motor Vehicles Agreement (MVA), which was proposed by India in November 2014 during Kathmandu Summit
  • Objective: This major sub-regional transport project seeks seamless transit of passenger and cargo vehicles among BBIN countries. However, Bhutan could not muster public and parliamentary support for it.
  • Ultimate Objective: Free movement of goods and people in the region which would be supplemented by upgrading roads, railways and waterways infrastructure
  • When signed: June 2015 in Thimpu
  • Present Connectivity between the regions:
    • Nepal and Bangladesh: Kathmandu-Bodhgaya, Janakpur-Patna and Dehradun-Mahendranagar
    • India and Nepal: Delhi and Kathmandu, Varanasi- Kathmandu, Delhi-Mahendranagar and Delhi-Pokhra under India and Nepal Bus Service pact signed in November 2014
    • India and Bangladesh: Agartala- Dhaka, Kolkata-Dhaka, Guwahati-Shillong-Dhaka and Kolkata- Agartala via Dhaka

Motion Picture Academy expels movie mogul Harvey Weinstein

  • Who is Harvey Weinstein: He is a producer who won Oscar award in 1998 for Best Picture "Shakespeare in Love,". He co-founded The Weinstein Co., the movie and TV production company, with his brother Bob.
  • Why: The expulsion by Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences comes after recent reports by The New York Times and The New Yorker about sexual harassment and rape allegations against Weinstein going back decades.
  • The decision was reached by "well in excess of the required two-thirds majority" of the 54-member academy board.
  • Earlier precedence: Carmine Caridi, a character actor who had his membership revoked in 2004 for lending DVD screeners of films in contention for Oscars that ended up online.
  • Impact: The decision may raise ringbells for others like Roman Polanski, an Oscar-winner who in the 1970s pleaded guilty to drugging and raping a 13-year-old girl, and entertainer Bill Cosby, who has faced dozens of allegations of sexual assault.

Mohun Bagan lifts Governor's Gold Cup for 10th time

  • Defeated Whom: Partha Chakra by 1-0 to lift the 37th All India Governors Gold Cup football tournament.
  • Where: Paljor Stadium, Gangktok
  • Governor's Gold Cup: Also called Sikkim Gold Cup organized by Sikkim Football Association. It is the only tournament to have been held uninterruptedly for past 31 years.
  • Mohun Bagan: Mohun Bagan was established in 1889 by three famous aristocratic Bengali families of North Kolkata. Bhupendra Nath Bose was the first ever president of the club. The team won its first trophy in 1904, when they won the Coochbehar Cup.

Samajika Smugglurlu Komatollu penned by Kancha Ilaiah

  • What is the Issue: The book was in news as Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra while rejecting a plea against the book said that SC is not here to curb the fundamental right of freedom of speech and expression as enshrined in the Article 19. The bench also said that banning the book would not be appropriate under Article 32 of the Indian Constitution.
  • Who filed the petition: The petition, filed by advocate KLNV Veeranjaneyulu, also wanted a chapter titled “Post-Hindu India” in Ilaiah’s book Hindutv-Mukt Bharat to be banned.
  • What does the book details: The book is on the Arya-Vyasa community, which says that they used to eat meat and were agriculturalists
  • Kancha Ilaiah: He is an Indian political theorist, writer and activist for Dalit rights. He is a prolific writer in both English as well as Telugu.

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana launched in A&N islands

  • Who launched it: The Lt. Governor of A & N Islands, Admiral (retd) Devendra Kumar Joshi launched Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) in A&N islands.
  • Pradhan Mantri Matritva Vandana Yojana: Previously called Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY), is a maternity benefit program run by the government of India. It was introduced in 2010 and its Pan-India implementation was announced by PM Modi on 1st January 2017.
  • Who are eligible under PMMVY: It is a conditional cash transfer scheme for pregnant and lactating women of 19 years of age or above for first two live births.
  • Objective: It provides a partial wage compensation of Rs 6000 to women for wage-loss during childbirth and childcare and to provide conditions for safe delivery and good nutrition and feeding practices.

Federer beats Nadal in straight sets to win Shanghai Masters

  • Roger Federer of Switzerland defeated his old rival Rafael Nadal in Shanghai Masters in straight sets 6-4, 6-3.
  • It was a 94th title for the Swiss legend, drawing him level with the great Ivan Lendl. Federer is now close to world number one Nadal in terms of rankings points.

Andhra, K'taka joint winners in South Regional Cricket for Blind

  • Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka were declared as joint winners in the Southern Regional Cricket tournament for visually impaired.
  • The final match between Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka scheduled to conduct at Thalassery Conorvayal Cricket Stadium was cancelled due to rain in the morning.
  • Both teams would represent the South India to attend the National Cricket tournament for the blind at Mumbai in November 2017.

IIT Madras develops algorithms that learn like humans

  • Genesis: The genesis of the algorithm lies in algorithm AlphaGo developed by Google post-acquisition of the company DeepMind. The algorithm enabled to beat the world’s number one at the Go game.
  • What has been developed: One of the methods behind the success of AlphaGo, called deep reinforcement learning, is being further developed by IIT Madras researchers to construct their own algorithm to play not just the Go game, but for more complex tasks. 
  • What is Go game: Go (literally: "encircling game") is an abstract strategy board game for two players, in which the aim is to surround more territory than the opponent. The game was invented in ancient China more than 2500 years ago, and therefore is believed to be the oldest board game continuously played today.

Ophelia threatens Ireland with worst storm in 50 years

  • What is Ophelia: It is the sixth major hurricane of the Atlantic season, which is due to make landfall on the south west coast of Ireland.
  • Why a big concern: At a gusts of more than 130 kilometres per hour (80 miles per hour), it is being seen as the strongest since Hurricane Debbie, which killed 12 in Ireland in 1961. British Media is comparing it to Great Storm of 1987.
  • What is a Hurricane: It is a type of tropical cyclone which occurs in the Atlantic region with a low pressure in centre. More specifically, when tropical depressions attain a speed of more than 74 miles per hour, then they are categorised as Hurricanes.
