Navika Sagar Parikrama to commence in Sept '17

  • Navika Sagar Parikrama, the first ever Indian circumnavigation of the globe by an all-women crew, is scheduled to commence in early September 2017.
  • They will begin their voyage from Goa on an Indian-built sail boat INSV Tarini and expect to return to Goa in March 2018, after completing the circumnavigation.
  • The project is considered essential towards promoting Ocean Sailing activities in the Indian Navy while depicting Government of India’s thrust for ‘Nari Shakti’.

  • The Union Environment Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan launched the 'Harit Diwali Swasth Diwali' campaign on August 17, 2017.
  • As part of the campaign, the Environment Ministry will undertake several activities to create awareness among various stakeholders and encourage people to participate in combating air pollution.

Background

Diwali is an integral part of our rich tradition and a festival that embodies joy and happiness.  In recent times, the pattern of celebration has changed somewhat and has got associated with excessive bursting of crackers, which contributes significantly to air and noise pollution.  As a result, there has been a significant impact on the environment and health of the people.

NHAI launches mobile App MyFASTag and FASTag Partner

  • The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) launched two mobile Apps – MyFASTag and FASTag Partner in New Delhi to facilitate the availability of FASTags for Electronic Toll Collection. 
  • MyFASTag is a consumer App that can be downloaded from the App Store for both Android and iOS systems. A consumer can purchase or recharge FASTags on this App. The App also helps to keep track of transactions and provides for online grievance redressal.
  • FASTag Partner is a merchant App. Agencies like Common Services Centre, banking partners and vehicle dealers can sell and enroll FASTag through this App. In addition to this, the App can also be used to activate the RFID tags that came built in with around 74 lakh cars in the country following the 2013 Gazette Notification in this regard.
  • With the help of this from October 1, 2017, all lanes of all 371 NHAI toll plazas in the country will become FASTag enabled.

Defence Ministry clears proposal to procure 6 Apache attack helicopters

  • The Indian Army will soon get its first attack helicopters, after the Defence Ministry on August 17, 2017 cleared purchase of six Apache attack choppers at a cost of around Rs 4,168 crore.
  • The helicopters are being bought under an option clause of 50 percent repeat order in the previous deal under which 22 Apache attack choppers were bought for the IAF.
  • An inter-governmental agreement for four frigates through partnership between Russian and Indian shipyards was signed during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India in October 2016.

US, Japan to advance defence cooperation with India, South Korea and Australia

  • The US and Japan have agreed to advance their multilateral security and defence cooperation with countries like India, South Korea and Australia, amidst China's growing assertiveness in the Asia Pacific region.
  • Expressing continuing concerns about the security environment in the East China Sea, they reaffirmed the importance of working together to safeguard the peace and stability of the East China Sea.
  • The two leaders strongly encourage China to take decisive measures to urge North Korea to change its course of action.

Vishal Sikka resigns as CEO of Infosys

  • Vishal Sikka resigned as Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Infosys with immediate effect.  Sikka has now been appointed as executive vice-chairman.
  • The IT major named U B Pravin Rao as Interim Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, reporting to Sikka under the overall supervision and control of the company’s board.

Who is Vishal Sikka?

Vishal Sikka was the first non-founder CEO of the Infosys. He took charge 3 years back in 2014. Prior to joining Infosys, Sikka was a member of the Executive Board and the Global Managing Board of SAP AG, leading all SAP products and innovation globally.
