Moody’s upgrade Sovereign Credit Rating of India to Baa2 from Baa3

  • Moody's Investors Service upgraded India’s credit rating from the lowest investment grade of Baa3 to Baa2 (indicates stronger financial position) and changed the outlook from stable to positive.
  • India’s rating has been upgraded for the first time in 14 years. Last, it was upgraded in 2003.

Centre introduces Daily Drug Regimen for treatment of Tuberculosis

  • The Ministry of Health & Family Welfare announced the launch of daily regimen for TB patients across the country under the Revised National TB Control Programme (launched in 1993).
  • As of now, the Health Ministry has been providing the thrice weekly regimen for the treatment of TB.
  • The Daily Drug Regimen, recommended by WHO in 2010, comprises of (i) daily administration of ehtambutol drug to TB patients; and (ii) using fixed dose combinations (FDC) for treatmen as against separate 7 tablets previously.

Qaumi Ekta Week to be observed from November 19-25

  • With a view to foster and reinforce the spirit of Communal Harmony, the “Qaumi Ekta Week” (National Integration Week) will be observed all over the country, from the 19th to 25th November, 2017.
  • The National Foundation for Communal Harmony (NFCH), an autonomous organisation with the Ministry of Home Affairs, organises Communal Harmony Campaign coinciding with the Qaumi Ekta Week and observes the Communal Harmony Flag Day on 25th November.

  • The Election Commission has rejected rebel JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav faction’s claim on party’s election symbol and recognized Nitish led group as real JDU.
  • The commission has also entitled Nitish Kumar faction to use poll symbol – arrow.

ICC bans Hafeez from bowling in international matches

  • Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez has been suspended from bowling in international cricket for the third time. Sport's governing body found his bowling action to be illegal.
  • The majority of his deliveries exceeded the 15 degrees level of tolerance permitted under the regulations.
  • Hafeez was previously banned in November 2014 and June 2015 because of an illegal bowling action.

Wrestler Sandeep Yadav banned for four years for failing dope test

  • Wrestler Sandeep Tulsi Yadav, who had also failed the dope test last year, has been handed a four-year ban by the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel of the NADA.
  • The wrestler was tested positive for methandienone, an anabolic steroid.

Canada the focus country at IFFI 2017

  • Canada is the focus country at the 48th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) for 2017. The festival will be held from November 20 to 28 in Goa.
  • The special focus will kick off on November 21 with "Old Stone", directed by Johnny Ma, being the opening film.

Padma Bhushan Hindi Poet Kunwar Narayan Dies At 90

  • Eminent Hindi poet and Jnanpith awardee Kunwar Narayan passed away on 15 November 2017. He was 90.
  • Born on September 9, 1927 in Uttar Pradesh’s Faizabad, Kunwar Narayan was known for his poetry, stories and critiques.
  • The Hindi poet was honoured with Jnanpith Award in 2005 and Padma Bhushan in 2009.
  • Apart from his first poetry collection "Chakravyuh", which is considered a landmark in Hindi literature, his other works are "Atmajayee", "Apne Samne", "Koi Dusra Nahi", and "In Dinon".

Lost Hitomi X-ray satellite unveils cosmic recipe for nearby universe

  • Data captured by a lost Hitomi X-ray satellite mission has provided scientists with vital information about gases in a galaxy cluster 240 million light years from Earth.
  • The Japanese Hitomi X-ray satellite, developed jointly by NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), has given astronomers an important insight into the Perseus galaxy cluster — a collection of thousands of galaxies orbiting within a thin hot gas.
  • The data captured by it during its 38 days in space has allowed scientists to analyse the composition of the Perseus gases and gain a deeper understanding of the stellar explosions that created them.

Earth-sized planet that may host alien life discovered

  • Astronomers have discovered an Earth-sized planet with ‘mild’ climate and peaceful parent star just 11 light years away, which may be the closest known comfortable abode for possible life.
  • This Earth-sized world is expected to be temperate, with a surface temperature that may also be close to that of the Earth. Ross 128 is the “quietest” nearby star to host such a temperate exoplanet.
  • Ross: Ross 128 b will by then take the crown from Proxima b and become the closest exoplanet to Earth.
