Ad Guru Padmashri Alyque Padamsee passes away at 90

  • Alyque Padamsee, an ad guru and a stalwart in theatre and film world, passed away on November 17, 2018 in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. He was 90.
  • He was often referred to as father of modern Indian advertising and built over hundred brands.
  • He also gave several iconic advertisements like the Liril girl, Surf’s Lalitaji, Hamara Bajaj and Charlie’s Cherry Blossom, among others.
  • He produced around 70 plays for the English Theatre and is remembered for his role as Mohammed Ali Jinnah in Richard Attenborough’s “Gandhi” (1982).
  • He was also a part of the Prime Minister’s AIDS Task Force and also served as an adviser to Chandrababu Naidu, the former chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.
  • His autobiography is titled ‘A Double Life’ which gives an account of his years in the theatre and advertising industries.

Justice Amareshwar Pratap Sahi sworn in as Chief Justice of Patna High Court

  • Justice Amareshwar Pratap Sahi was sworn-in as the Chief Justice of Patna High Court.
  • He was administered the oath of office by Governor of Bihar Lalji Tandon.
  • Justice Sahi was a judge of the Allahabad High Court before his present appointment.
  • He replaced Justice M R Shah who was recently appointed as the judge of Supreme Court.

 US authorities agree on how to regulate food products cultured from animal cells

  • The US authorities have agreed on how to regulate food products cultured from animal cells — paving way to get so-called “lab meat” on plates.
  • The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) agreed to share regulation of cell-cultured food products.
  • The FDA would oversee the collection and differentiation of cells — when stem cells develop to specialised cells — while USDA would oversee the production and labelling of food products.

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih sworn in as seventh president of Maldives

  • Ibrahim Mohamed Solih was sworn-in as the seventh president of Indian Ocean nation Maldives on November 17, 2018.
  • He vowed to end systematic corruption and investigate alleged human rights abuses under his predecessor, Abdulla Yameen.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the more than 300 foreign dignitaries at the ceremony in Male.
  • The visit is Modi's first to the Maldives after years of tense relations between the two countries because of Yameen's embrace of China during his tenure.

Indian paddler Manav Thakkar settles for bronze in Belarus

  • India’s Manav Thakkar settled for a bronze medal in the U-21 singles category in the ITTF Challenge Belgosstrakh Belarus Open.
  • Manav, who had an impressive run in the tournament, lost to Russia’s Denis Ivonin in the semifinals (2-3) to miss out on the gold.

Oracle veteran Thomas Kurian to head Google Cloud

  • Oracle's ex-product chief Thomas Kurian will head Google's cloud division, replacing Diane Greene. He will join the Google on November 26, 2018.
  • Kurian, who spent 22 years at Oracle and had been a close confidante of its founder Larry Ellison, resigned in September after struggling to expand its cloud business.

UIDAI CEO ABP Pandey appointed as new Revenue Secretary

  • Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) chief executive officer (CEO) Ajay Bhushan Pandey will succeed Hasmukh Adhia as Revenue Secretary.
  • Adhia, who retires at the end of this month, that is, on November 30, 2018 is also the finance secretary.
  • UIDAI’s Pandey will continue to hold the additional charge of CEO of the Authority and chairman of Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) for the time being.

1971 War hero Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri passes away

  • Hero of Indo-Pak 1971 war, Brigadier Kuldeep Singh Chandpuri passed away on November 18, 2018. He was 78.
  • He was the recipient of country’s second highest gallantry award, Mahavir Chakra (MVC) for his role in Battle of Longewala.
  • The battle of Longewala was fought on December 5, 1971 between Pakistani assault forces and 23rd Punjab Regiment of Indian Army at the Indian outpost of Longewala in Ramgarh of Jaisalmer district.
  • Later in 1997, the battle of Longewala was immortalized when a movie with title ‘Border’ was made by J P Dutta featuring Sunny Deol  as Maj Chandpuri in lead role.
