Not every inter-religious wedding is love jihad: Kerala HC

  • Kerala High Court stated that every inter-caste or inter-religion marriage in the state is being portrayed as "love jihad" or "ghar wapsi", which is illegal and incorrect. In fact, such marriages should be encouraged, observed the high court bench while considering the case of Sruthy who married a Muslim man.
  • Victim of the Love Jihad: Sruthi had alleged that she was tortured and threatened in the yoga centre for marrying a man of Islam faith.  The court also directed officials to take stern action against such religious conversion centres in the state.
  • The court observed that Article 25(1) of the Constitution guaranteed to every citizen the right to freely profess, practice, and propagate any religion, which could not be trampled upon by subversive forces or religious outfits.

South Africa displace India from top of ODI rankings

  • South Africa’s Win over Bangladesh: India lost their numero uno status in ICC ODI rankings to South Africa following the Proteas' win over Bangladesh in the second ODI.
  • India and South Africa Points: South Africa's 104-run win over Bangladesh in the second ODI in Paarl, the Proteas jumped to the top spot, leapfrogging India. While India and South Africa have identical 120 points against their name, India are placed second on the basis of decimal points.
  • India had claimed the top spot in the ICC rankings following their 4-1 win over Australia at home recently.

Assam govt. rolls out new Tourism policy

  • Objective: Assam government rolled an ambitious Tourism policy by declaring the sector an industry with an aim to increase tourist inflow by at least two to three times within next five years.
  • The Tourism Policy of Assam 2017, effective from January next year till December 2022, gives special emphasis on making the state a destination of film making by offering a range of incentives to movie producers.
  • This tourism policy paper is aimed at creating a policy framework to move tourism into a major economic sector of Assam increasing the inflow of tourists. The Tourism policy of Assam 2017 was approved by the state Cabinet on October 17 and the key focus of it was to attract the film industry to come and shoot in the state.

 Jacinda Ardern to be next New Zealand PM

  • New Prime Minister appointed in New Zealand: New Zealand will get its youngest Prime Minister in more than 150 years after the small, nationalist New Zealand First Party agreed to form a new government with Labour Party leader Jacinda Ardern, ending the National Party's decade in power.
  • Effect of New govt.: The announcement of the new government drove the New Zealand dollar down around 1.7% to its lowest levels in four and half months, as markets worried about more protectionist policies to come.
  • Fewer immigrants expected: Mr. Peters said new policy announcements would be up to Ms. Ardern, but gave a foretaste of what may come by saying he expected fewer immigrants to be allowed into New Zealand.

Punjab govt. approves hike in income limit of OBCs

  • Limit of Hike in Income of OBC: Punjab Chief Minister has approved an increase in the gross annual income limit for the creamy layer of the Other Backward Classes and Backward Classes from Rs 6 lakh to Rs 8 lakh.
  • This was the fourth revision of the creamy layer, which was fixed at Rs 1 lakh in 1993 and subsequently hiked to Rs 2.5 lakh in 2004, Rs 4.5 lakh in 2008 and Rs 6 lakh in 2013.
  • Objective: The move is reported to be aimed at ensuring more equitable distribution of reservation benefits among the OBCs.

Squaring the Circle: Mahatma Gandhi and the Jewish National Home by P.R. Kumaraswamy

  • Mahatma Gandhi was “accommodative” of violence of the Arab Palestinians, even as he advised the Jewish people to counter Germany’s ruler Adolf Hitler through non-violence, a new book has claimed. There is no writing of Mahatma Gandhi supporting violence by any group any where in the world.
  • Writing in Squaring the Circle: Mahatma Gandhi and the Jewish National Home, P.R. Kumaraswamy of JNU has revealed that some of the Mahatma’s writings on Israel were not brought to the public by his secretary Pyarelal.
  • Mahatma Gandhi was equally close to many Jewish figures like Hermann Kallenbach and it is not historically accurate to bring out a mono-dimensional perspective of him on a complex case like Israel-Palestinians dispute.

New species of large gecko discovered from Eastern Ghats

  • New Species of Lizards Discovered: Geckos or house lizards usually evoke in us varying degrees of disdain. But a team of scientists’ fascination for these reptiles led them to discover a new species from the Eastern Ghats. The Kanger valley rock gecko Hemidactylus kangerensis is the newest addition to India’s lizard species.
  • Who discovered the new species:  The National Centre for Biological Sciences, discovered the gecko from Chhattisgarh’s Kanger Ghati National Park.
  • Where the species are found: The species is also found in Jagdalpur and Sukma in Chhattisgarh and in Khamman in the adjoining State of Telangana, which are part of the Eastern Ghats.
  • Though several researchers and reptile buffs had spotted the species before, they had mistaken it for the commonly-found rock gecko which it resembles.

Centre reduces call rates on Satellite Phone used by armed forces

  • As a Diwali gift to personnel of military and paramilitary, the Government has abolished the monthly charges on Digital Satellite Phone Terminal, DSPT and also reduced call rates to 1 rupee per minute.
  • Call rates reduced to: Defence as well as paramilitary personel will be able to make calls to their families using satellite phone for Rs 1 per minute from today, instead of the existing Rs 5 per minute
  • DSPT service provided by BSNL is used by soldiers and officers of various army and para-military units deployed in remote and far-flung areas as no other means of communications are available in such areas.

RIL-BP to invest $1.5 bn in satellite fields

  • How much investment is done: Reliance Industries and its partner BP Plc of the UK will invest about USD 1.5 billion to bring to production six satellite gas discoveries in the flagging KG-D6 block by 2022.
  • RIL-BP combine yesterday submitted to the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH) a field development plan for what are known as satellite and other satellite fields.
  • Four deep sea satellite gas finds: They plan to develop four deep sea satellite gas finds, named D-2, 6, 19 and 22, together with two other nearby finds, D-29 and D30, in the Krishna Godavari basin block
  • RIL-BP combine does not plan to alter the USD 3.18 billion investment plan for D-34 or R-Series gas field in the same block, which was approved in August 2013.

Leslie Thng takes over as Vistara CEO

  • New CEO appointed Replacing Whom: Full service carrier Vistara on Monday (16 October) said Leslie Thng has taken over as its Chief Executive Officer after receiving all requisite approvals. Thng, whose appointment is effective from today (16 October), replaces Phee Teik Yeoh, who has returned to Singapore Airlines.
  • About Lesile thng: Thng has taken over as the airline s new CEO post all requisite approvals from the Government of India and regulatory authorities. He has joined the carrier from Budget Aviation Holdings -- a Singapore Airlines Holding Company -- where he was serving as the Chief Commercial Officer. Thng started his career with Singapore Airlines in 1999 and has held many senior positions at the carrier.
