Pakistan-origin becomes first female Muslim Aus Senator

  • Mehreen Faruqi, a Pakistani-origin woman has become the first Muslim female Senator to be sworn-in to Australia’s Parliament.
  • Faruqi replaces veteran senator Lee Rhiannon in the upper house.
  • Faruqi migrated to Australia from Pakistan in 1992, representing the Greens in the New South Wales upper house since 2013.

Vinesh Phogat: First Indian women to win Wrestling Gold in Asian Games

  • Vinesh Phogat won India a gold medal by beating Yuki Irie of Japan on Aug 20 in the final of the women's wrestling at the Asian Games 2018.
  • Vinesh defeated Yuki 6-2 in the 50kg category to bag the gold medal.
  • She also became the first Indian woman wrestler to win a gold medal at the Asian Games.
  • Asian Games 2018 is being held in Indonesia.

India-Japan Annual Defence Ministerial Dialogue held

  • Japan and India held their annual defence Ministerial Meeting on 20 Aug 2018 in Delhi.
  • Japan and India emphasised the significance of defence and security cooperation.
  • Both countries also emphasized that it is important for the two countries to further strengthen defence and security cooperation under the ‘Japan-lndia Special Strategic and Global Partnership’ that aligns Japan’s ‘Free and Open Indo-Pacific Strategy’ with India’s ‘Act East Policy’ to work together in achieving common objectives.
  • Japan, India and US are looking to enhance their security cooperation deeper. Probably, to give it a regional organization structure. The trilateral Maritime Exercise MALABAR 2018 can be seen a step in this regard.
  • Indian Defence Minister Sitharaman briefed her counterpart Onodera on the setting up of two Defence Industry Corridors in India and invited participation of Japanese enterprises.

New Specific Health Warning on Tobacco Products Packs notified

  • The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has notified a new set of specified health warnings for all tobacco products on or after September 1 — to be displayed on the packets.
  • It is a punishable offence under the Section 20 of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products [Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution] Act, 2003.

Northern states to set up joint secretariat to deal with drugs menace

  • The Chief Ministers of four Northern States on August 20, 2018 unanimously decided to set up a joint secretariat at Panchkula, Haryana for data and information sharing to effectively tackle the issue of drug menace in their respective states.
  • Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Uttrakhand have joined hands to fight the drug problem.
  • The states decided that there will be a meeting of all Chief Ministers every six months and an officer level meeting every three months, which will be rotationally chaired by the Chief Secretary or the Director General Police of the states concerned.

Gopalkrishna Gandhi conferred with Rajiv Gandhi National Sadbhavana Award

  • Former West Bengal Governor Gopalkrishna Gandhi was honoured with this year's Rajiv Gandhi Sadbhavna Award for promoting communal harmony and peace.
  • Rajiv Gandhi was born on 20 Aug 1948 and every year this award is given to individual for their outstanding work towards peace and secularism.
  • Gopalkrishan Gandhi
    • Gopalkrishna Devdas Gandhi (born 22 April 1945) is a retired IAS officer and diplomat, who was the 22nd Governor of West Bengal serving from 2004 to 2009.
    • He is the grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.
    • As a former IAS officer he served as Secretary to the President of India and as High Commissioner to South Africa and Sri Lanka, among other administrative and diplomatic posts.

Chandrayaan-I data confirms presence of ice on Moon

  • Scientists have found frozen water deposits in the darkest and coldest parts of the Moon’s Polar Regions using data from the Chandrayaan-I.
  • Chandrayan I was launched by India in 2008.
  • Most of the new found water ice lies in the shadows of craters near the poles, where the warmest temperatures never reach above minus 156 degrees Celsius. 
  • Due to the very small tilt of the Moon’s rotation axis, sunlight never reaches these regions.
  • Chandrayaan 2 to be launched Soon
    • Chandrayaan-2, India's second mission to the Moon is a totally indigenous mission comprising of an Orbiter, Lander and Rover. After reaching the 100 km lunar orbit, the Lander housing the Rover will separate from the Orbiter. 
    • After a controlled descent, the Lander will soft land on the lunar surface at a specified site and deploy a Rover.
    • The mission will carry a six-wheeled Rover which will move around the landing site in semi-autonomous mode as decided by the ground commands.
    • The instruments on the rover will observe the lunar surface and send back data, which will be useful for analysis of the lunar soil.
    • The Chandrayaan-2 weighing around 3290 kg and would orbit around the moon and perform the objectives of remote sensing the moon.
    • The payloads will collect scientific information on lunar topography, mineralogy, elemental abundance, lunar exosphere and signatures of hydroxyl and water-ice.

Turkey initiates dispute complaint with WTO against US

  • Turkey has initiated a dispute complaint with the World Trade Organisation against additional tariffs imposed by the United States on Turkish steel and aluminium imports.
  • Previously, President Donald Trump imposed double tariffs on Turkish metal imports.
  • Why US has imposed double tariffs?
    • Turkey has put terrorism charges of a U.S. evangelical Christian pastor who has been living in Turkey for the last two decades.
    • He has become an unwitting flashpoint in the diplomatic rift between the two NATO allies. 
    • Turkey is also a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization.
    • Turkey has requested WTO dispute consultations with the United States concerning additional import duties imposed by the United States on steel and aluminium products.
    • Under dispute consultations, both sides have 60 days to seek a solution, then the issue can go to the WTO Dispute Settlement Body.

Saurabh Chaudhary Wins Gold in Shooting at 18th Asian Games

  • 16-year-old Indian shooter Saurabh Chaudhary has created an Asian Games record on his way to the gold medal in the 10m Air Pistol event.
  • The young shooter, playing his first big international tournament, qualified for the final in the top spot ahead of compatriot Abhishek Verma and also four-time Olympic gold medallist Jin Jong-oh who’s in fact the most successful individual shooter in Olympic history.

  • Spin legend Shane Warne will talk about his extraordinary cricketing career and his life off the pitch besides unveiling several unknown facts in his autobiography which will be published this October.
  • Ebury Press will publish Warne’s memoir “No Spin”.
  • The memoir is written with cricketer and TV presenter Mark Nicholas.
