Foundation Stone of India International Convention and Expo Centre laid

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 20 Sept laid the foundation stone for the India International Convention & Expo Centre (IICC) in Delhi.
  • IICC will be an integrated complex with facilities like exhibition halls, convention centre, open exhibition spaces, retail services and high-end offices.
  • The facilities provided at the centre will be on a par with the best in the world in size and quality, offering setting for international and national events, meetings, conferences, exhibitions and trade shows.

MHA, ISRO sign MoU to set up Integrated Control Room for Emergency Response

  • Home Ministry and Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) have signed a MoU for setting up of a state-of-the-art Integrated Control Room for Emergency Response (ICR-ER) in Home Ministry.
  • The ICR-ER will cater to the requirement of Disaster Management as well as Internal Security.
  • It will address the requirement of receipt of information on near real-time basis, strategic level monitoring, situation awareness, command and control, preparedness and response in the diverse internal security situation and disaster-related emergencies. 

Successful Flight Test of Surface-to-Surface Prahar Missile

  • The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) on 21 Sept successfully test-fired the indigenously developed surface-to-surface tactical missile ‘Prahaar’ from ITR, Balasore.
  • Prahaar is better than Prithvi as it can aim at multiple targets at one time.
  • What is Ballistic Missile?
    • Ballistic missiles are basically projectiles.
    • It is governed by the law of gravity.
    • Ballistic missiles are guided for a brief period just in starting phase of the trajectory and the rest of the path is like a free falling projectile under gravity.
  • Types of Ballistic Missile:
    • Short Range Ballistic Missiles (SRBM) – Up to 1000 KM
    • Intermediate Range Ballistic Missiles (IRBM) – 1000-5500 KM
    • Inter-continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) – More than 5500 KM
  • Indian Ballistic Missiles
    • All the variants of Prithvi are SRBMs.
    • Agni I to Agni IV are IRBMs.
    • Agni V and Agni VI are ICBMS.

Union Home Minister launches two portals to strengthen Women Safety

  • Indian Home Ministry has launched two separate portals to strengthen women safety.
  • The two portals are:
    • Cybercrime.gov.in
    • National Database on Sexual Offenders
  • Cybercrime.gov.in
    • It will receive complaints from citizens on objectionable online content related to child pornography, child sexual abuse material, sexually explicit material such as rape and gang rape.
  • National Database on Sexual Offenders
    • It is a central database of “sexual offenders” in the country which will be maintained by the NCRB for regular monitoring and tracking by the State Police.
    • The database is accessible only to the law enforcement agencies for investigation and monitoring purpose.
    • The database will include offenders convicted under charges of rape, gang rape, POCSO and eve teasing. At present the database contains 4.4 lakh entries.

NATIONAL SPORTS AWARDS -2018 announced

  • The National Sports Awards 2018 were officialy announced on 20 Sept.
  • Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2018:
    • Indian Cricket Team Captain Virat Kohli: Kohli will become the third crickter to receive this award after Sachin Tendulkar and Mahendra Singh Dhoni.
    • Weightlifter Saikhom Mirabai Chanu
  • Arjuna Awards 2018:
    • Total 20 atheletes will receive Arjuna Award which includes:
    • Neeraj Chopra
    • Hima Das
    • Smriti Mandhana
  • Dronacharya Award 2018
    • It is given to outstanding coaches and mentors. This year, 8 coaches have been selected.

3rd edition of MahaBiz 2018 to be held in Dubai in October

  • The 3rd edition of acclaimed International Business Conference  ‘MahaBiz 2018’ will be held in Dubai on 12th and 13th October 2018.
  • MahaBiz is considered a bridge for business opportunities between Maharashtra state and Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.
  • GCC is a political and economic alliance of six Middle Eastern countries.
  • It includes Saudi Arabia , UAE , Kuwait , Oman , Bahrain and Qatar.

Centre approves appointment of four railway GMs

  • The appointments of four common managers within the Indian railways had been accredited on 20 Sept.
  • Appointments of General Managers:
  • West Central Railway: Ajay Vijayvergiya
  • North Central Railway: P C Sharma
  • South Eastern Railway: P S Mishra
  • Rail Wheel Factory, Yehlanka: Margoob Hussain

Indonesia imposes moratorium on new palm oil plantations

  • Indonesia's president Joko Widodo has signed a moratorium on new palm oil development and ordered a review of existing plantations.
  • Why?
    • Palm oil, mainly produced in Malaysia and Indonesia, is used in a vast number of products globally from cosmetics to snacks and is a big export earner for both countries.
    • Clearance of rainforest for palm oil and pulp wood plantations is also behind a slide in the population of critically endangered orangutans, a great ape found only in Indonesia and Malaysia.
    • The palm oil industry is the target of a worldwide campaign by conservationists and human rights groups, who are pressuring consumer brands to drop producers involved in deforestation and rights abuses.

Zoological Society of London honour for A.P. scientist

  • The Zoological Society of London (ZSL) which has had Fellows like Charles Darwin, has nominated Shabuddin Shaik for its fellowship.
  • He is a faculty member of the Acharya Nagarjuna University.
  • He has to his credit the discovery of 40 new cave fauna species, including five new genera.
  • He is a biospeleologist.
  • Biospeleology is the scientific study of cave organisms and ecosystems.

Booker Prize picks its youngest author to be short-listed

  • The 27-year-old British novelist Daisy Johnson has become the youngest writer ever to be shortlisted for the Man Booker prize, with her novel Everything Under, about a troubled mother-daughter relationship that reimagines Greek myth in modern Britain.
  • The winner will be announced on 16 October at a dinner in London’s Guildhall.
  • The Man Booker Prize for Fiction is a literary prize awarded each year for the best original novel written in the English language and published in the UK.
