National Crime records Bureau creating national registry for crimes against women

  • The NCRB functions under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The National Registry is created because of an around three-percent increase in crimes against women and a 12-percent rise in incidents of rape in 2016 as compared to 2015.
  • A majority of cases categorised as crimes against women were reported under “cruelty by husband or his relatives” (32.6 per cent), followed by “assault on woman with intent to outrage her modesty” (25 per cent).
  • According to National Crime Records Bureau, the highest number of rapes have been reported from Madhya Pradesh (4,882), followed by Uttar Pradesh (4,816) and Maharashtra (4,189) in 2016.

INSV Tarini completes historic Circumnavigation

  • Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini (INSV Tarini) entered Goa harbour.
  • This is the first-ever Indian circumnavigation of the globe by an all-women crew. It was the six-member all-woman team.
  • The vessel was skippered by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi.
  • The name of expedition for circumnavigation of the globe on INSV Tarini is ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’.

Paraguay become the third Country to open its embassy in Jerusalem

  • Earlier U.S.A and Guatemala took politically sensitive move and shifted embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
  • Palestinian leaders and Palestinian Liberation army has condemned this move as Palestinian leaders see East Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.
  • Israel occupied West Bank in 6-day war of 1967 and later annexed East Jerusalem. These two along with Gaza are known as “Occupied Territories’ in international parlance.
  • The first use of the term 'territories occupied' was used in the U.N security council (UNSC) Resolution 242.

Burundi votes to allow president to extend time in power

  • A majority of Burundi's voters agreed to amend the constitution in changes that could prolong the rule of President Pierre Nkurunziza until 2034.
  • That could give him another 14 years in power when his current term expires in 2020.
  • It is landlocked country in the African Great Lakes region of East Africa. Its capital is Bujumbura.

  • India receives the 1st cargo of Abu Dhabi National Oil Company crude oil for its Strategic Reserve
  • India received the 1st cargo of UAE crude oil for filling up one of the two Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR) caverns built by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserve Ltd (ISPRL) at Mangalore.
  • The Centre has built crude oil storage facilities with total capacity of 5.33 Million Tonnes (MT) at three locations under phase I of the SPR programme.
  • Besides Mangalore (1.5 MT), the other two locations to have SPR are Vishakhapatnam (1.33 MT) and Padur (2.5 MT).
  • UAE is India's fifth-largest crude oil supplier.

MCX launches India’s first copper options contracts


  • Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd. (MCX) has launched India’s first options contract on copper futures.
  • Currently, June, August and November 2018 option contracts are available for trading, with one MCX copper futures contract (1 MT) as the underlying.
  • Multi Commodity Exchange of India Ltd (MCX) is an independent commodity exchange based in India. It was established in 2003 and is based in Mumbai.


Elena Svitolina wins women's singles of Rome Open

  • Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina won the Rome Open championship.
  • The Ukrainian player thus retained the Rome title that she won in 2017
  • It is one of the Premier 5 event of the 2018 WTA tour and also known as Italian Open
  • It was 75th edition of the Italian open.

2018 Billboard Music Awards

  • Ed Sheeran emerged as the big winner as the singer-songwriter bagged five top honours at 2018 Billboard Music Awards.
  • The top five honours include Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Song Sales Artist and Top Radio Songs Artist categories.
  • Janet Jackson created history when she won the BBMA Icon Award. With this, she became the first African American female artiste to receive the recognition.
  • The Billboard Music Award is an honor given by Billboard, a publication and music popularity chart covering the music business. Started in 1990 and it is held annually.

Brahmos Missile successfully test-fired to Validate Service Life Extension

  • As part of service life extension programme BrahMos, supersonic cruise missile was successfully test fired at Integrated Test Range (ITR) in Balasore, Odisha.
  • BrahMos is a joint venture between DRDO of India and Russia.
  • The name BrahMos is formed from the names of two rivers, the Brahmaputra of India and the Moskva of Russia.
  • It is the world's fastest anti-ship Cruise Missile in operation. The missile travels at speeds of Mach 2.8 to 3.0.
