PM inaugurates Phase 1 of RO RO Ferry Service between Ghogha and Dahej

  • Who will inaugurate: At a public meeting in Ghogha, the Prime Minister will inaugurate Phase 1 of the RO RO (Roll on, Roll off) ferry service between Ghogha and Dahej.
  • Objective: This ferry service shall reduce the travel time between Ghogha in Saurashtra, and Dahej in South Gujarat, from about seven or eight hours, to just over an hour. The Prime Minister will travel in the maiden voyage of this service, from Ghogha to Dahej.
  • He will lay the Foundation Stones of several infrastructure and development projects, including an integrated transport hub, regional water supply schemes, housing projects, and a flyover.

5-member committee formed to select candidate for post of editor-in-chief of RSTV

  • A five-member committee, headed by Prasar Bharati Chairman A Surya Prakash, has been formed to select the candidate for the post of editor-in-chief of Rajya Sabha TV(RSTV).
  • RSTV: Rajya Sabha TV is owned and operated by the Upper House of Parliament and the vice-president is its chairman.
  • The committee will invite applications and conduct interviews to select a suitable candidate and submit its recommendation to the Honble Chairman.
  • After Sappals resignation, Vempati was given the additional charge of the RSTV CEO

G7, Tech giants agree on plan to block dissemination of Islamist extremism over internet

  • Who agreed: G7 countries and tech giants including Google, Facebook and Twitter have agreed to work together to block the dissemination of Islamist extremism over the internet.
  • Italian Interior Minister Marco Minniti said in Ischia, after a two-day meeting with his Group of Seven counterparts that these are the first steps towards a great alliance in the name of freedom. He stressed upon the importance of the internet for extremist “recruitment, training and radicalisation.
  • Objective: It is aimed at removing jihadist content from the web within two hours of being posted.

UAE names country's first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence

  • The UAE has named Omar Bin Sultan Al Olama as the country’s first Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence as part of a cabinet reshuffle.
  • He has beenappointed as a part of the UAE’s ambition to be at the forefront of the global technological revolution, arabianbusiness.com reports. The ambitious UAE plan foresees the nation. 
  • The major move was announced on Twitter by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Prime Minister and vice-president and ruler of Dubai.
  • Aim: The new initiative aims to improve country’s performance and create an innovative and highly-productive environment by means of investing in AI.

Centre gives clearance to greenfield airport project at Hirasar

  • Cost of the project: The Centre has given clearance for a greenfield airport project at Hirasar, near Rajkot in Gujarat, at a cost of over 1,400 crore rupees.
  • The state government had proposed a new airport in Rajkot district as the existing one is small and the earlier plan to extend the current runway could not be materialised due to high land cost.
  • The Environment Ministry has given the environment clearance to the Gujarat State Aviation Infrastructure Company Ltd (GSAICL) for development of a greenfield airport at Rajkot.

Former CPI-M MP Amal Datta passes away

  • When: Former Lok Sabha member Amal Datta, died at a private city hospital on 21 October 2017, following a cardiac arrest.
  • Amal Datta: He represented the Diamond Harbour constituency in the lower house of parliament for 14 years. He was a graduate from the London School of Economics, he was a Bar-At-Law from the Middle Temple, London. He was also the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament for two consecutive terms from 1987 to 1989.

GSTN launches excel-based offline tool to file initial GSTR-3B returns

  • GST Network has launched an excel-based offline tool for businesses to file initial GSTR-3B returns. Taxpayers can download the offline utility from the GSTN portal under the download section and after fill in the data.
  • How it works: After uploading of the return to the GST Portal, the taxpayer has to preview the form, complete formalities like submit, offset the liability and file their GSTR-3B Return using digital signature or electronic verification code.
  • Benefit: This facility will provide an opportunity to the taxpayer to verify details of GSTR 3B before filing and minimise chances of error.

Centre permits banks to sell more small savings schemes

  • Objective: In order to encourage savings, the government has allowed banks, including top three private sector lenders, to accept deposits under various small savings schemes like National Savings Certificate (NSC), recurring deposits and monthly income plan.
  • Banks can also sell National Savings Time Deposit Scheme 1981, National Savings (Monthly Income Account) Scheme 1987, National Savings Recurring Deposit Scheme 1981 and NSC VIII issue.
  • As per the notification, all public sector banks and top three in the private sector -- ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank -- to receive subscription from the expanded portfolios.
  • Increased outlets for selling small savings scheme would result in higher mobilisation under the scheme.

Maharashtra finalises Rs 400 crore project to modernise police control rooms

  • The Maharashtra government has finalised Rs 400 crore project to modernise police control rooms across the state.
  • Aim: The project aims at reducing the response time and modernising the call-taking and dispatch mechanism for emergencies across the state.
  • The response time to an emergency that the government plans to achieve after the revamp will be 8 minutes in cities and 15-18 minutes in rural areas.
  • The upgrade of control rooms is part of the 'dial 112' project. The state government will be shifting to 112 as a single number for all the emergencies by early next year. The aim is to streamline the emergency response process by merging all three into one.

ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting-Plus Meeting to be held in Philippines

  • Defence minister Visit to Philippines: In her first foreign visit as defence minister, Nirmala Sitharaman will travel to the Philippines on Monday to attend a Southeast Asian defence ministers’ meeting which is likely to review the regional security architecture including China’s growing assertiveness in the South China Sea.
  • The ADMM (ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting)-Plus meeting on October 23 and 24 is expected to deliberate extensively on the situation in Afghanistan and Syria besides China’s growing military presence in the disputed South China Sea.
  • ASEAN: The ADMM-Plus is a platform for ASEAN and its eight dialogue partners to strengthen security and defence cooperation for peace, stability, and development in the region.
  • Meeting Discussions: The ADMM-plus is also likely to discuss enhancing maritime cooperation among the member countries.  The two-day meeting will discuss ways to enhance defence and security cooperation among the member nations to effectively counter various transnational security challenges facing the region.
