Multidimensional Poverty Index 2018 released

  • The 2018 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) was released on September 20, 2018 by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).
  • The 2018 report provides data for 105 countries covering almost 75 percent of the world’s population.
  • The most glaring highlight of the report is that “Half of all people living in poverty are younger than 18 years old.”
  • Key Highlights
    • Some 1.3 billion people live in multidimensional poverty, which is almost a quarter of the population of the 104 countries.
    • Of these 1.3 billion, almost half - 46 percent - are thought to be living in severe poverty and are deprived in at least half of the dimensions covered in the MPI.
    • 1.1 billion of the multidimensional poor live in rural areas around the world, where poverty rates, at 36 percent, are four times higher than among those living in urban areas.
  • India in the report
    • In India, the first country for which progress over time has been estimated, 271 million people moved out of poverty between 2005/06 and 2015/16.
    • The poverty rate in India has nearly halved, falling from 55 percent to 28 percent over the ten-year period.
  • About MPI
    • It was first launched in 2010 and replaces previous Human Poverty Index.
    • It complements traditional income-based poverty measures by capturing the severe deprivations that each person faces at the same time with respect to education, health and living standards.

PM to launch Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana at Ranchi

  • The Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will launch the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) at Ranchi, Jharkhand, on September 23, 2018.
  • PMJAY is the alternative name of Ayushman Bharat - National Health Protection Mission (AB-NHPM).
  • Under this scheme, over 10 crore families will be provided health assurance worth Rs. 5 lakh each, every year.
  • At the same event, the Prime Minister will lay the Foundation Stone for medical colleges at Chaibasa and Koderma. He will also inaugurate 10 Health and Wellness Centres.

PM Modi inaugurates first airport of Western Odisha

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 22, 2018 inaugurated the first airport of western Odisha in Jharsuguda under the UDAN ('Ude Desh ka Aam Naagrik') scheme to boost regional connectivity.
  • With this, Jharsuguda airport becomes the second airport of the state, first being Biju Patnaik International Airport in Bhubaneshwar.
  • He also launched the commencement of work for revival of Talcher fertilizer plant in Odisha. This is the first plant in India to have a coal gasification-based fertilizer unit.
  • The prime minister also dedicated the Garjanbahal coal mines, and the Jharsuguda-Barapali-Sardega rail link to the nation.

First General Assembly of ISA to be held in New Delhi

  • The first General Assembly of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) will take place on October 2, 2018 in New Delhi.
  • The General Assembly will be followed by the Ministerial level Assembly of the ISA in Greater Noida on October 3, 2018.
  • Besides, second RE-INVEST and Indian Ocean Rim Association Energy Ministers Meeting would also take place concurrently till October 5, 2018.
  • Earlier on March 11, 2018, the Founding Conference of the ISA was jointly hosted by Prime Minister Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron in New Delhi.
  • About International Solar Alliance
    • It is an initiative and the brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which was first proposed in November 2015 at the Wembley Stadium, London.
    • It was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and then French President Francois Hollande at the U.N. Climate Change Conference in Paris on November 30, 2015.
    • It is an alliance of more than 121 countries, most of them being sunshine countries, which lie either completely or partly between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
    • It is headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana and its interim Director General is Upendra Tripathy.

Vietnam President Tran Dai Quang Dies at 61

  • Vietnam's President Tran Dai Quang died on September 21, 2018 after a serious illness. He was 61.
  • He was a former police chief known as a tough politician and committed communist with little tolerance for dissent.
  • Vietnam is a South-East Asian country and a member of ASEAN. Its capital is Hanoi and prime minister is Nguyen Xuan Phuc. Its currency is Vietnamese dong.

TN govt announces scheme for protection of Neela Kurinji plants

  • Tamil Nadu government on September 21, 2018 announced a novel scheme for the protection of the exotic Neela kurinji (Strobilanthus kunthianus) plants.
  • Following complaints that these rare and ecologically unique flowers are being packaged and sold on the commercial basis, the state department has warned that strict fines will be imposed in offenders.
  • The tropical Neelakurinji plants are native to the Western Ghats, especially the Nilgiris, has a 12-year flowering cycle.
  • Munnar in Kerala has the largest concentration of Neelakurunji in India. Out of about 450 species of Strobilanthes in the world, 146 are found in India and of them, about 46, in Munnar.
  • The Kurinjimala Sanctuary was declared in 2006 by the Kerala government for protecting the neelakurinji and its habitat.

International Peace Day: 21 September

  • The United Nations (UN) on September 21, 2018 observed the International Peace Day with the theme “The Right to Peace: The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70.”
  • The theme celebrates the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
  • The Human Rights Declaration was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in Paris on 10 December 1948 as a common standard of achievement for all peoples and all nations.
  • Also, the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 16 “Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions” calls for promoting peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development.
  • The International Day of Peace was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Women's boxing world championships from November in Delhi

  • The World Women’s Boxing Championships will be held from November 13-25, 2018 in New Delhi. This is the second time India is hosting the AIBA event (first time in 2006).
  • The celebrated M C Mary Kom, who has been nicknamed ‘Magnificent Mary’ by the AIBA, will be gunning for a sixth world title at the event. She won successive gold medals in 2002, 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2010 editions.
  • The first edition of the women’s world championship was held in the Unites States in Scranton in 2001.
  • In the last edition held in 2016 in Astana, Kazakhstan, India won just a silver, through Sonia Lather in the featherweight (57kg) category.
