Veteran actress Sridevi passes away

  • Bollywood’s legendary and veteran actor Sridevi passed away on February 25, 2018 due to cardiac arrest at a hospital in Dubai. She was 54.
  • Sridevi made her Bollywood debut as a child artist at the age of 12 in “Julie” (1975). In 1978 she played the lead role in "Solva Sawan". But it was only after five years with Jeetendra-starrer "Himmatwala" that she gained commercial success.
  • Her other major box office hits of the era were "Chaalbaaz", where she played the role of twins, "Nagina", and "Khuda Gawah" opposite Amitabh Bachchan.
  • Born Shree Amma Yanger Ayyapan in Tamil Nadu, she made her debut as a child artist in in Tamil film "Thunaivan" in 1969. She was 4 at that time. She also worked in Malayalam, Telugu and Kannada films.
  • Sridevi was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour, in 2013. She was last seen in movie “MOM” opposite Nawazzudin Sidiqque in 2017.

PM launches development projects worth Rs.1000 crores in Daman & Diu

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 24, 2018 launched development projects worth Rs 1,000 crore at Daman and Diu and inaugurated air services connecting the Union Territory (UT) to other parts of Gujarat.
  • Prime Minister also congratulated the UT on achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and lauded the efforts of the administration and the locals towards ensuring cleanliness.
  • The PM also laid the foundation stone for a slew of projects, including a water treatment plant, a gas pipeline, an electric sub-station, a municipal market and a foot overbridge.

Aruna Budda Reddy: 1st Indian to win individual medal at Gymnastics World Cup

  • Aruna Budda Reddy became the first Indian gymnast to clinch an individual medal at the Gymnastics World Cup in Melbourne by securing bronze in the women's vault.
  • Reddy, 22, scored 13.649 to finish behind gold medallist Tjasa Kysslef of Slovania and Emily Whitehead of Australia who took silver.
  • Indian gymnastics was put on the map when Ashish Kumar gave the country it’s first-ever gymnastics medal by winning a bronze at the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Team India clinches T20 series against South Africa 2-1

  • Indian cricket team ended their South Africa tour on wining note by winning the three-match T20 series 2-1. In the third and final T20 match played at Cape Town Men-in-Blue defeated South Africa by 7 runs.
  • Besides, in the final 5th T20 match at Cape Town, Indian women defeated South Africa by 54 runs to seal a first-ever away-series double. Having won the ODI series 2-1, India clinched the T20I series 3-1.
  • Player of the Series in women’s T20 series was Mithali Raj and in men’s T20 series was Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

All banks to link SWIFT to CBS by April 30: RBI

  • The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has directed banks to link the SWIFT (Society for World Interbank Financial Telecommunication System platform) with the core banking solutions (CBS) of banks by April 30, 2018.
  • SWIFT, a global financial messaging service, came into news after its misuse by Nirav Modi in Rs 11400 crore PNB fraud.
  • The SWIFT system promoted in 1973 by banks globally is used to transmit messages relating to cross border financial transactions.
  • Core banking refers to a centralised system established by a bank which allows its customers to conduct their business irrespective of the bank’s branch.

Odisha applies for GI tag for its version of Rasogolla

  • The state moved the GI Registry for its own version of the popular sweetmeat almost three months after West Bengal was awarded GI tag for 'Banglar Rasogolla' (Rasogolla of West Bengal).
  • Ratnakar Rout, Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation (OSIC) filed the application with the GI Registry in Chennai.
  • The GI tag for rasogolla had generated a bitter battle between Odisha and West Bengal. As per Odisha government, Odishara Rasogolla (Rsogolla of Odisha) is mentioned in a 16th century Odia epic, Dandi Ramayana, the state said in its claim to the GI Registry.

SC asks Centre to consider suggestions on Quadricycles

  • The Supreme Court asked the Centre to give "due consideration" to suggestions made on the issue of safety and emission standards of small four-wheeler vehicles and quadricycles.
  • Quadricycles are a new category of cycle-like four-wheelers which are now allowed to ply on the roads. The issue before the apex court also related to the sale of small four-wheelers with a mass of up to 1500 kg.
  • The Centre had earlier constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Dinesh Tyagi, director of the International Centre for Automotive Technology, for the purpose of framing rules and regulations for this new category of vehicles.

Kunwar Bai: 106-year-old icon for Swachh Bharat campaign passes away

  • Kunwar Bai, a 106-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh who was chosen as a mascot for the `Swachh Bharat Abhiyan', died on February 23, 2018 after a prolonged illness.
  • Kunwar Bai shot to fame in 2016 when the story of how she sold her goats to build a toilet at home got nationwide publicity.
  • She was felicitated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a public meeting at Kurrubhat village in Rajnandgaon district, and later made a mascot for the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

NHRC retains its ‘A’ status of accreditation with GANHRI

  • The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India has retained its ‘A’ status of accreditation with the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions, GANHRI in Geneva for the fourth consecutive term of five years.
  • Justice H L Dattu,Chairperson, NHRC was presented the certificate to this effect on the occasion of the ongoing annual meeting of GANHRI in Geneva, Switzerland from the February 21 to 23, 2018.
  • It is given to those NHRIs, which, after a rigorous process of review every five years, are found fully compliant with the UN mandated Paris Principles.
  • The NHRC, India got ‘A’ status of accreditation first time in 1999 which it retained in 2006 and 2011 reviews.
  • The United Nations’ Paris Principles, adopted in 1993 by UN General Assembly, provide the international benchmarks against which national human rights institutions (NHRIs) can be accredited.

GoM recommends implementation of E-way bill from 1 April

  • The group of state finance ministers on GST Network today decided to start the inter-state movement of goods worth more than Rs 50,000 through e-way bill mechanism from April 1, 2018.
  • After implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) from July 1, 2017, the requirement of carrying e-way bill was postponed pending IT network readiness. It was implemented from February 1, 2018 but the system crashed and its implementation was deferred.
