Medal winners of 17th World Police & Fire Games-2017 facilitated

  • The Union Home Minister Shri Rajnath Singh felicitated the medal winners of the 17th World Police & Fire Games held at Los Angeles, California, USA from August 7-16, 2017. He was the chief guest in the function organized by All India Police Sports Control Board (AIPSCB) to felicitate the medal winners.
  • The 101-member Indian Police contingent returned with a record breaking haul of 321 medals from the 17th World Police & Fire Games. The contingent bagged 151 Gold, 99 Silver and 71 Bronze medals in the seven events they participated in the Games.
  • In these games, about 8,000 and more sportspersons from 68 countries from all over the world took part in about 83 events whereas Indian Police contingent participated only in seven sports events i.e. Athletics, Archery, Wrestling, Boxing, Judo, Swimming & Shooting and gave their best performance breaking earlier records.
  • The Union Home Minister said the Government has raised the Prize money for the Medal Winners. An amount of Rs. 50,000/- has been sanctioned for winners of Gold medal, Rs. 45,000/- for Silver and Rs. 40,000/- for Bronze medals along with a certificate of participation in each event (Individual & Relay events).

NPAs: Independent AMCs, Steering Committees to be set  up for faster resolution

  • Independent asset management companies (AMCs) and steering committees will be set up for faster resolution of bad loans in the banking system.
  • Finance minister Piyush Goyal said as the government accepted five-pronged plan of the Sunil Mehta-panel.
  • The panel under the chairmanship of PNB non-executive chairman Sunil Mehta has recommended an asset management company/alternative investment fund (AIF)-led resolution approach to deal with NPA cases of more than Rs 500 crore.
  • There are about 200 accounts, each of which owes more than Rs 500 crore to banks. Their total exposure is about Rs 3 .1 lakh crore.
  • The finance minister also said the committee did not recommend setting up a 'bad bank' to deal with the mounting NPAs in state-own banks.
  • The panel has also suggested a plan for dealing with bad loans up to Rs 50 crore.
  • Under the SME Resolution Approach (SRA), loans up to Rs 50 crore would be dealt using a template approach supported by a steering committee.
  • The panel has recommended that the resolution should be non-discretionary and completed in a time bound manner within 90 days.
  • The Mehta committee has proposed a Bank Led Resolution Approach (BLRA) for loans between Rs 50 and Rs 500 crore. This segment has an exposure of over Rs 3 lakh crore.

Ex-chief of naval staff Admiral JG Nadkarni passes away

  • Former Indian Navy chief, Admiral Jayant Ganpat Nadkarni passed away.He was 86.
  • Nadkarni, the 14th Chief of Naval Staff (December 1987 – November 1990), breathed his last at the naval hospital.

 

China's Mount Fanjingshan added to UNESCO World Heritage List

 

  • Mount Fanjingshan, situated in the city of Tongren in China's southwestern province of Guizhou, was inscribed to the World Heritage List  at the 42nd World Heritage Committee meeting in Bahrain's capital Manama.
  • It is the 13th site in China included on the World Natural Heritage List, making the total number of world heritage sites in China reach 53.
  • Fanjingshan, the highest peak in the Wuling Mountain range at an altitude of 2,572 meters, stretches on an area of 402.75 square km with a buffer zone of 372.39 square km.
  • The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), official advisory body on the natural sites of the UNESCO heritage meeting, said Fanjingshan has proved its aesthetic value as a natural heritage site and met the criteria of world natural heritage, which require the nominated sites to demonstrate outstanding biological diversity and integrity.
  • The 42nd World Heritage Committee meeting, held from June 24 to July 4, will discuss 28 nominations to the World Heritage List, including five natural sites, 20 cultural sites and three mixed ones.

 

Palghar Fisherman selected for National Maritime Search & Rescue Award

 

  • A fisherman from Palghar district, who saved 12 people from a sinking boat, has been selected for a prestigious award in recognition of his search and rescue efforts.
  • Milan Shankar Tare, a resident of Satapati village, will receive the National Maritime Search and Rescue Award, instituted by the National Maritime Search and Rescue Board.
  • The award will be presented to Tare in New Delhi on July 5.

 

Colombia's Chiribiquete national park added to UNESCO World Heritage List

 

  • The United Nations has placed Colombia's Chiribiquete national park on its list of world heritage sites.
  • The park, which straddles the southern provinces of Caquetá and Guaviare, is the country's largest and has one of the highest rates of plant diversity in the northern Amazon.
  • It is also famous for its table-top rock formations known as tepuis, which rise out of the forest.
  • It is the ninth site in Colombia to be given world heritage status

  • The ICC will impose a ban of minimum six Tests or 12 ODIs on ball tampering offenders.
  • Ball tampering has now been upgraded as a Level 3 offence as per ICC's new code of conduct
  • The 12 suspension points is equivalent to a ban of 6 Tests or 12 ODIs from the earlier 1 Test and 2 ODIs

Rajasthan launches Annapurna Milk Scheme under Mid Day Meal scheme

  • Students of government’s primary and upper primary school will be served milk under the mid-day meal scheme.
  • Chief minister Vasundhara Raje will launch ‘Annapurna Doodh Yojana’ on July 2 by offering a glass of milk to a student at Rajasthan Adarsh Senior Secondary School at Dahmi Kalan near Jaipur, according to the school education and language department.
  • Special parents-teachers meeting will be organised at each school on the day, said Vasudev Devnani, the minister of state for education.
  • Devnani will preside over the inaugural function and home minister Gulab Chand Kataria will be the guest of honour on the occasion

Mexico elects Lopez Obrador as next President

  • Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has declared victory in Mexico's presidential election, as preliminary results showed that the leftist veteran politician, who had presented himself as an agent of change, secured a landslide win.
  • President-elect Lopez Obrador is estimated to have received over 53% of the vote, more than double the total of his closest rival, according to the country's electoral commission.

Cauvery authority directs Karnataka to release water

  • The Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA), directed Karnataka to release water to Tamil Nadu and other States but did not discuss Karnataka’s decision to challenge the constitution of the CWMA in the Supreme Court.
  • The Karnataka government decided to file an appeal in the Supreme Court against the setting up of the CWMA and the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) on the grounds that the move should have been discussed in Parliament.

2021 census data to be stored electronically

  • The data collected during the 2021 Census will be stored electronically, the first time since the decennial exercise was conducted in 1951 in Independent India.
  • According to an amended rule notified by the Registrar General of India (RGI) on June 19.
  • “schedules” (a tabular form containing details of individuals), carried by enumerators to households, were being stored in a physical form at the government’s storehouse in Delhi.
  • It is based on these schedules that the relevant statistical information on population, language. and occupation are sorted and published.
