Complete draft of NRC published in Assam

  • The complete draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC), bearing the names of over two crore citizens of Assam has been published.
  • The NRC draft figures the names of 2 crore 89 lakh 83 thousand 677 citizens of the state.
  • A total of 3 crore 29 lakh 91 thousand and 384 persons had applied for inclusion of their names in the NRC updation process.
  • Names of 40 lakh 7 thousand and 707 people have not been included in the draft.
  • Assam Chief Minister Sarbanand Sonowal said, the entire process of NRC updation has been done in impartial and transparent manner. Mr. Sonowal appealed all sections of people to maintain peace and calm.
  • Opportunity will be given to those persons whose names are not included in the draft.
  • Background:
  • Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, founded in 1961 by Government of India Ministry of Home Affairs, for arranging, conducting and analysing the results of the demographic surveys of India including Census of India and Linguistic Survey of India.
  • The National Register of Citizens (NRC) contains names of Indian citizens of Assam. The NRC was prepared in 1951,after 1951 Census of India.
  • The NRC Updation of 2014–2016 across Assam includes the names of those persons (or their descendants) who appear in the NRC 1951, or in any of the Electoral Rolls up to the midnight of 24 March 1971 or in any one of the other admissible documents issued up to the midnight of 24 March 1971, which would prove their presence in Assam on or before 24 March 1971.

 

Parliament passes bill for merger of subsidiary banks with SBI

  • The Parliament has passed the State Banks (Repeal and Amendment) Bill, 2017 with the Lok Sabha approving the amendments sent by the Rajya Sabha.
  • The Upper house had earlier passed the bill with amendments.
  • The Bill seeks to repeal the State Bank of India (Subsidiary Banks) Act, 1959, the State Bank of Hyderabad Act, 1956 and further to amend the State Bank of India Act, 1955.
  • Under it, the five associates banks that were merged are State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, State Bank of Hyderabad, State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala and State Bank of Travancore.
  • The merger of these banks is already in effect from 1st April,2017.

Criminal Law (Amendment) Bill 2018 Passed in Lok Sabha

o   The Criminal Law Amendment Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on clearing the way to award death penalty to convicts of child rapes in the country.

o   The bill was initiated after outrage over the gruesome Kathua rape and murder case in which an eight-year-old nomadic girl was sedated and raped multiple times.

o   The bill seeks to replace the Criminal Law (Amendment) Ordinance promulgated on April 21.

o   The bill received support from all the political parties unanimously, however, there were certain objections to the government taking the route of an ordinance for the same.

o   What is Ordinance :

o   Ordinances are laws that are promulgated by the President of India on the recommendation of the Union Cabinet.

o   They can only be issued when Parliament is not in session. They enable the Indian government to take immediate legislative action.

o   Ordinances cease to operate either if Parliament does not approve of them within six weeks of reassembly, or if disapproving resolutions are passed by both Houses.

o   It is also compulsory for a session of Parliament to be held within one months

Lok Sabha passes Homeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill

  • The Lok Sabha passed the Homeopathy Central Council (Amendment) Bill 2018 which replaces the ordinance which was promulgated on 18th of May 2018 by the President of India.
  • The Bill amends the Homeopathy Central Council Act, 1973 which sets up the Central Council of Homeopathy, CCH.
  • The Central Council regulates homeopathic education and practice.
  • Replying to a debate on the Bill, Minister for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik said, the members of the board of governor will replace the existing functionaries of the CCH and it will be comprised of seven persons of eminence in the field of homeopathy education and eminent administrators.
  • The tenure of the board will be for one year.
  • The Government brought the Ordinance to avoid further delay of appointment of members as elections were delayed due to administrative reasons.

 

Bajrang Punia wins 2nd consecutive international gold at Yasar Dogu International

o   In Wrestling, Bajrang Punia has won his second consecutive international gold while Sandeep Tomar had to be content with a silver medal at the Yasar Dogu International in Istanbul, Turkey.

o   Indian wrestlers returned with 10 medals, including seven by women, from the ranking event.

o   Commonwealth Games champion Bajrang, did not have to break a sweat as his opponent Andriy Kvyatkovskyy from Ukraine withdrew from the 70 kilogram final due to an injury.

o   Bajrang had won a gold at the Tbilisi Grand Prix in Gerogia early this month. In the women's competition, Pinki was the lone gold medallist in the 55kg category with her 6-3 win over Ukraine's Olga Shnaider in the final

 

International Army Games 2018 declared open in Moscow

  • The International Army Games 2018 at Patriot Park in Moscow region was declared open by Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu.
  • Indian teams are taking part in two major competitions-- Tank Biathlon event at Alabino ranges, Moscow region and Elbrus Ring competition in Caucasus mountains.
  • The games are being held from July 28 to August 11 at 24 training grounds in seven countries namely Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Iran, Kazakhstan, China and Russia.
  • It is for the first time that Armenia and Iran are co-hosting events of the Army Games.
  • The opening ceremony was attended by Indian Ambassador to Russia, Pankaj Saran along with Indian attaches attended the ceremony.

 

Foundation stone of Phase-II Construction of NEIAH in Shillong laid

  • Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for AYUSH Shri Shripad Yesso Naik laid the foundation stone of the 2nd Phase of Construction of North East Institute of Ayurveda & Homeopathy (NEIAH) at NEIAH,Campus.Mawdiangdiang, Shillong.
  • The approximate estimated cost of the construction is Rs 40.80 crore for an area of 10481.53 sqm and will comprise of residential accommodation for students, doctors and staff and guest house.
  • The minister expressed that the 2nd phase will cater some of the basic needs of students, doctors and employee of the institute.
  • This will also motivate people for cultivation and preservation of valuable medicinal plants in the region and it will be possible to promote and preserve the traditional knowledge of folk medicine.

 

3rd BRICS Film Festival concluded with India Day

  • The 3rd BRICS Film Festival took place in Durban, South Africa, along with the International Durban Film Festival (DIFF) from 22-27th July, 2018.
  • The last day of the festival was celebrated as India Country Day, followed by Awards and Closing Ceremony.
  • Awards won by Indian films in the 3rd BRICS Film Festival, Durban, South Africa
  • Best Actress: Bhanita Das, Village Rockstars
  • Best Film: Newton by Amit Masurkar
  • Special Jury Award: Village Rockstars by Rima Das
  • BRICS Film Festival:
  • The film festival is aimed at celebrating world-class film productions from the BRICS nations with the objective of inspiring more collaboration from these nations.
  • The format of the festival consisted of screening two feature films from each country in the competition category and three feature films in the non-competition category.
  • A total of twenty-four films were screened during the duration of the festival.

 

Seema Nanda: First Indian American to be chosen as CEO of DNC

  • Indian American Seema Nanda has been appointed as the CEO of the Democratic National Committee (DNC), the formal governing body for the Democratic Party, making her the first from the community to lead operations of a major political party in the US.
  • Why she was selected :
  • Nanda, selected after a five-month search led by current DNC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mary Beth Cahill, will manage the day-to-day operations when she takes charge later next month, the organization announced.
  • Most recently, she has served as the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at The Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, an umbrella body of American civil rights interest groups, where she oversees strategy and manages day-to-day operations.
  • Seema is a graduate of Boston College Law School and Brown University and a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association.

Earth Sciences Ministry unveils Deep Ocean Mission

  • ₹8,000 crore proposal given to PMO for a revolution similar to space exploration.
  • Looking to emulate the success of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in designing and launching satellites, the Centre has drawn up a five-year, ₹8,000 crore plan to explore the deep recesses of the ocean.
  • The Union Earth Sciences Ministry — tasked with coordinating the exercise — unveiled a blueprint of the ‘Deep Ocean Mission (DOM)’.
  • Among the key deliverables to achieve these goals are an offshore desalination plant that will work with tidal energy, and developing a submersible vehicle that can go to a depth of at least 6,000 metres with three people on board.
  • India has been allotted a site of 75,000 square kilometres in the Central Indian Ocean Basin (CIOB) by the UN International Sea Bed Authority for exploitation of polymetallic nodules (PMN).
  • These are rocks scattered on the seabed containing iron, manganese, nickel and cobalt.
  • India’s Exclusive Economic Zone spreads over 2.2 million square kilometres and in the deep sea.
  • What is Polymetallic nodules (PMN) :
  • Polymetallic nodules (PMN) are also known as manganese nodules. They are potato-shaped, largely porous nodules found in abundance carpeting the sea floor in the deep sea of the world oceans.
