PM, Korean President inaugurate Samsung Mobile Manufacturing Facility in Noida

  • Samsung India aims to double annual mobile production capacity by 2020.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in on inaugurated Samsung’s mobile manufacturing plant, touted as the biggest in the world, in Noida.
  • With this plant, set up on an investment of ₹4,915 crore, the South Korean electronics major plans to make India an export hub, with 50% of its overall production coming from here in the next three years from the present 10%.
  • The government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative was not just an economic policy measure.
  • India now ranks second, globally, in the manufacture of mobile phones, with the number of mobile phone manufacturing factories rising from just 2 to 120, in about four years’ time, creating 4 lakh direct employment opportunities.

CIPET: Centre for Skilling & Technical Support (CSTS) inaugurated

  • Centre for Skilling & Technical Support (CSTS) and lay Foundation Stone of new CIPET Building at Doiwala, Dehradun
  • CIPET trained around 2.42 lakh manpower across India in 2014 -18; CIPET Centre at Doiwala to train around 1000 students in the first year of its operation
  • Union Minister for Chemicals & Fertilizers and Parliamentary Affairs, Shri Ananthkumar will be inaugurating the CIPET:  Centre for Skilling & Technical Support (CSTS) at ITI Building and laying the foundation stone of new Central Institute of Plastics Engineering &Technology (CIPET) Building at Doiwala, Dehradun.
  • CIPET operates from 31 locations spread across the country and CIPET: CSTS, Dehradun will be the 32nd centre.
  • The CIPET Centre at Doiwala will train and develop around 1000 students in the first year of its operation through various skill development training programmes and subsequently Diploma level programmes.

Smart Cities Digital Payments Awards 2018 Launched

  • India Smart Cities Fellowship (ISCF) and Internship (ISCI) Program Launched To Provide Opportunity to Youth to Work in the Domain of Urban Planning and Governance.Smart Cities Digital Payments Awards 2018 Launched to Reward Cities at the Forefront of Digital Payments .
  • ‘Citiis’ Challenge Announced to Select Innovative Smart City Projects for Financial Support and Foreign Technical Assistance 
  • Smart cities fellowship and internship program will provide the youth an opportunity to experience the aspects of Urban planning and governance.
  • It is intended to promote ‘Digital India’ and ease of living for India’s urban residents by promoting digital payments and encouraging Smart Cities to adopt innovative digital payments initiatives.
  • India Smart Cities Internship (ISCI) Program and The Smart Cities Digital Payments Awards 2018 and the ‘CITIIS’ challenge under the Smart Cities Mission and the Local Area Plan (LAP)/Town Planning Scheme (TPS) to be implemented in 25 cities on pilot basis under AMRUT.
  • The period of engagement is 1-year extendable upto 3 years.
  • India Smart Cities Internship (ISCI) Program - MoHUA will engage students pursuing Under Graduate/Graduate/Post Graduate degree as Interns to help implementation of Smart City Projects in various States/Cities. The internship will be on unpaid basis for a period of 6 to 12 weeks. They will be given an Experience Certificate at the end successful completion of the program. 
  • The Smart Cities Digital Payments Awards 2018 - The Smart Cities Digital Payments Awards (SCDPA) 2018 ‘100 days Challenge in 100 Smart Cities’ is part of the initiatives of MoHUA to promote ease of living for India’s urban residents. 
  • The challenge period would be 100 days starting from the launch of the awards. This would galvanize the digital payments landscape in the Smart Cities. The awards will be conferred based on a 2-stage process.

Government declares 6 educational ‘Institutions of Eminence

  • Government declares 6 educational ‘Institutions of Eminence’ ; 3 Institutions from Public Sector and 3 from Private Sector shortlisted 
  • Each ‘Public Institution’ selected as ‘Institution of Eminence’ will get financial assistance up to Rs. 1000 Crore over a period of five years.
  • The landmark decision will help the selected Institutions to become World Class Educational Institutions.
  • An Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) in its report recommended selection of 6 institutions (3 from public sector and 3 from private sector) as Institutions of Eminence. The details of these Institutions are as under:
  • Public Sector: (i) Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Karnataka; (ii) Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay, Maharashtra; and (iii) Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.
  • Private Sector: (i) Jio Institute (Reliance Foundation), Pune under Green Field Category; (ii) Birla Institute of Technology & Sciences, Pilani, Rajasthan; and (iii) Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal, Karnataka.
  • Usees :
  • It will ensure complete autonomy to the selected institutions and facilitate them to grow more rapidly. At the same time, they will get more opportunity to scale up their operations with more skills and quality improvement.
  • It is expected that the above selected Institutions will come up in top 500 of the world ranking in 10 years and in top 100 of the world ranking eventually overtime.
  • To achieve the top world ranking, these Institutions shall be provided with greater autonomy  to admit foreign students up to 30% of admitted students; to recruit foreign faculty upto 25% of faculty strength; to offer online courses upto 20% of its programmes; to enter into academic collaboration with top 500 in the world ranking Institutions without permission of UGC.
  • Accordingly, the Government / UGC approved the scheme of providing Regulatory Architecture for setting up / upgrading of 20 Institutions (10 from public sector & 10 from private sector) as world class teaching and research institutions called as ‘Institutions of Eminence’.
  • The Regulatory Architecture has been provided in the form of UGC (Declaration of Government Institutions as Institutions of Eminence) Guidelines, 2017 for public Institutions and UGC (Institutions of Eminence Deemed to be Universities) Regulations, 2017 for private Institutions.
  • Under this scheme, 114 applications (74 from public sector & 40 from private sector) were received in the Ministry for selection of IoEs.
  • In order to select the Institutions as IoEs, an Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) comprising of Shri N. Gopalaswami (Chairman), Prof. Tarun Khanna, Prof. Pritam Singh & Smt. Renu Khatore was formed.

Asian Development Bank(ADB) accords approval for lining project of Son canal in Shahabad – Bhojpur region

  • ADB accords approval for lining project of the Son canal in Shahabad – Bhojpur region of Bihar; it will bring help agri-sector immensely in the region. 
  • Union Minister of State (IC) for Power and New & Renewable Energy took a meeting with the officials from ADB and Finance Ministry to review the progress of  lining project of the Son canal in Shahabad – Bhojpur region of Bihar.
  • During the meeting ADB representatives informed that ADB had accorded approval for this project.
  • It may be noted that the estimated cost of this project is USD 503 million (Rs 3272.49 crore) out of which USD 352 million is being provided by ADB. This project will bring immense benefits to the agriculture sector of Shahabad – Bhojpur region of Bihar.
  • Asian Development Bank- The Asian Development Bank is a regional development bank established on 19 December 1966, which is headquartered in the Ortigas Center located in the city of Mandaluyong, Metro Manila, Philippines.

India, South Korea Sign Five MoUs in Science & Technology

  • India and South Korea signed five MoUs in the field of Science & Technology. Union Minister for Science & Technology, Dr Harsh Vardhan and his South Korean counterpart,Mr. You Young Min signed three MoUs for
  • Programme of Cooperation 2018-21;
  • Establishment of Future Strategy Group;
  • Cooperation in Biotechnology & Bioeconomy.
  • The two Ministers reviewed bilateral S&T cooperation between the two countries since the last meeting of the Steering Committee at Seoul in November 2015.
  • It was also agreed to jointly establish two additional India-Korea Joint Network Centres in areas among ‘Cyber Physical System- Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things focused on agriculture, energy, water and transportation and ‘Semiconductor Electronics’.
  • A memorandum of understanding (MOU) is a nonbinding agreement between two or more parties outlining the terms and details of an understanding, including each parties' requirements and responsibilities. An MOU is often the first stage in the formation of a formal contract.


Indian Railways Introduces First Double Stack Dwarf Container Service

  • Indian Railways Introduces First Double Stack Dwarf Container Service from Rajkot Division, Western Railway.
  • Indian Railways has received increased revenue of Rs. 18.50 lakhs by operation of Double Stack Dwarf Container Service.
  • These short-heighted Double Containers can run on most tracks over Indian Railways 
  • Uses:-
  • With the use of these double-stack dwarf containers, the cost of the unit will be significantly reduced due to the rail transport being cheaper than the road.
  • Due to this Double Stacked Dwarf Container service, Indian Railways has received increased revenue of Rs. 18.50 lakhs.
  • The Double Stacked Container is 6 ft 4 inches in height and can run on electrified tracks.
  • Despite being smaller in size, the dwarf containers can hold a capacity of 30,500 kgs. In comparison with regular containers, these containers are 662 mm short but 162 mm wider.
  • The dwarf containers can hold a volume of approximately 67% more when compared to traditional containers. Presently, due to its height, the regular double stack ISO containers can run only on few chosen routes on Indian Railways but these short-heighted Double Containers can run on most tracks very easily. 
  • This train was booked from the Reliance Rail Siding at Kanalus to Rewari in the state of Haryana; it was loaded with 82 containers Polypropylene Granules

First ever ‘India Tourism Mart’ to be hosted in New Delhi :

  • ‘India Tourism Mart’ will help increase tourist footfalls into the country.
  • The Tourism Ministry in partnership with the  Federation of Associations in  Indian  Tourism and  Hospitality  (FAITH)  and with the support of State /UT Governments  will organize  the  ‘first ever’ India  Tourism  Mart (ITM)  from  16th  to  18thSeptember, 2018  at  Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The Minister added that the Tourism Ministry has been conducting foreign road shows, releasing theme based promotional videos and thus, the ITM 2018 will be a big step which will get buyers from all over the world.
  • Shri Alphons,Minister of Tourism also hoped that through ITM 2018, India can showcase its hidden destinations  to the world, especially to emerging tourism markets like China, Latin America, and Japan etc.


US Prez Donald Trump nominates Brett Kavanaugh as Supreme Court Judge

  • Donald Trump nominated Brett Kavanaugh, 53, to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy. 
  • The nomination will set in motion an acrimonious and expensive confirmation process.
  • Conservative groups have already launched what will collectively be a multi-million dollar campaign in support of Trump’s nominee.

Tamilnadu Assembly passes Lok Ayuktha Bill

  • The Tamil Nadu Lokayukta Bill 2018 was passed in the Assembly, amid protests by opposition parties, with the main opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and its ally Congress walking out of the House alleging that it would be a “powerless” and “toothless” anti-corruption body.
  • The Lokayukta will consist of a chairman and four members. While the chairman should be current or former judge of the high court or should have served a minimum of 25 years in the field of anti-corruption, public administration, awareness, finance or law, two of the four members should have experience in the legal system..
  • The Supreme Court had asked 12 states, including Tamil Nadu, to explain why the government had not appointed Lokayuktas.
  • The Lokayukta Act was passed by the central government in 2013 and was notified by the Centre in 2014. Section 63 of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, states that every state shall establish a body to be known as the Lokayukta.

Dipa Karmakar clinches gold medal at Gymnastics World Cup

  • India's premier gymnast Dipa Karmakar clinched a gold medal in the vault event of FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup at Mersin in Turkey.
  • The 24-year-old from Tripura, Dipa Karmakar scored 14.150 to win gold.This is Dipa's first medal in a World Challenge Cup. She had topped the qualification also with a score of 13.400.
  • Dipa has also qualified in balance beam finals by finishing third in the qualification with a score of 11.850.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Dipa Karmakar on winning a well-deserved Gold in the vault event at the FIG World Challenge Cup in Mersin, Turkey.
  • What is vault? The vault is an artistic gymnastics apparatus on which gymnasts perform, as well as the skill performed using that apparatus. Vaulting is also the action of performing a vault.
