EXPLAINED : CRIMEAN-CONGO HAEMORRHAGIC FEVER

Context

The Palghar administration was on alert against a possible spread of the Congo fever in the Maharashtra district.

About Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever

  • It is a viral haemorrhagic fever usually transmitted by ticks.
  • It can also be contracted through contact with viraemic animal tissues (animal tissue where the virus has entered the bloodstream) during and immediately post-slaughter of animals.
  • Human-to-human transmission can occur resulting from close contact with the blood, secretions, organs or other bodily fluids of infected persons.
  • Its outbreak can lead to epidemics.
  • It has a high case fatality ratio (10-40%) and is difficult to prevent and treat.
  • It is found in Eastern Europe, particularly in the former Soviet Union, throughout the Mediterranean, in northwestern China, central Asia, southern Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Indian subcontinent.
  • It was first described in the Crimea in 1944 and given the name Crimean haemorrhagic fever.
  • In 1969 it was recognized that the pathogen causing Crimean haemorrhagic fever was the same as that responsible for an illness identified in 1956 in the Congo.

Signs & Symptoms

  • Its initial signs and symptoms include headache, high fever, back pain, joint pain, stomach pain, and vomiting.
  • Red eyes, a flushed face, a red throat, and petechiae (red spots) on the palate are common.
  • Other Symptoms may also include jaundice, and in severe cases, changes in mood and sensory perception.
