EXPLAINED: GREEN CRACKERS

EXPLAINED: GREEN CRACKERS

Context

Delhi is set for its first full-fledged debut with ‘green’ crackers for Deepavali.

Details

  • Green crackers are “reduced emission crackers”. According to the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, firecrackers that cause 30-35% lower emission of particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5) and 35-40% lower emission of sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide are categorized as “green crackers”.
  • The products have a low content of aluminium. Use of barium salt and ash as a drying agent is banned for such crackers.
  • Green crackers are less harmful and less dangerous than conventional ones. They are the crackers with reduced emission and decibel level.
  • They are known as 'green' firecrackers because they have a chemical formulation that produces water molecules, which substantially reduces emission levels and absorbs dust.
  • It promises a reduction in particulate matters and harmful gases, like nitrous oxide and sulfur oxide, by 30- 35 per cent.
  • The technology is being developed by the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in collaboration with eight other government labs.
  • Three types of firecrackers have been developed by the scientists, named Safe Water and Air Sprinklers (SWAS), Safe Thermite Cracker (STAR) and Safe Minimal Aluminium (SAFAL), in which the commonly used pollution-causing chemicals - aluminium, barium, potassium nitrate and carbon - have either been removed or sharply reduced.
  • All three have matching sound intensity with conventional crackers.
