EXPLAINED : METHANE HYDRATES IN KRISHNA-GODAVARI BASIN

EXPLAINED : METHANE HYDRATES IN KRISHNA-GODAVARI BASIN

Details

  • As per the recent study by Agharkar Research Institute(ARI),Department of Science and Technology, the Krishna-Godavari (KG) Basin holds a massive reserve of methane hydrate, a rich source of clean fuel.
  • As per the study It has identified the methanogens that produced the biogenic methane trapped as methane hydrate, which can be a significant source of energy.
  • Methane hydrate is formed when hydrogen-bonded water and methane gas come into contact at high pressures and low temperatures in oceans.
  • The study found massive methane hydrate deposits of biogenic origin in the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin and near the coast of Andaman and Mahanadi.

About Methane

  • It is a colourless, odourless gas that occurs abundantly in nature and as a product of certain human activities. It is among the most potent of the greenhouse gases.
  •  Its chemical formula is CH4.
  • Wetlands are the major natural source of methane produced.
  • Other important natural sources of methane include termites (as a result of digestive processes), volcanoes, vents in the ocean floor, and methane hydrate deposits that occur along continental margins and beneath Antarctic ice and Arctic permafrost.

About Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin

  • It is an extensive deltaic plain formed by two large east coast rivers, Krishna and Godavari in the state of Andhra Pradesh and the adjoining areas of Bay of Bengal in which these rivers discharge their water is known as Krishna Godavari Basin.
  • It is a proven petroliferous basin of continental margin located on the east coast of India.
