EXPLAINED: WHAT IS BRUCELLOSIS, THE BACTERIAL DISEASE THAT HAS INFECTED THOUSANDS IN CHINA?

What is brucellosis?

  • It is a bacterial disease which infects cattle, swine, goats, sheep and dogs.
  • Transmission : Can only get infected if they come in direct contact with infected animals or by eating or drinking contaminated animal products or by inhaling airborne agents. Human to human transmission of the virus is rare.
  • According to the WHO, most cases of the disease are caused by ingesting unpasteurised milk or cheese from infected goats or sheep.
  • Symptoms of the disease:  fever, sweats, malaise, anorexia, headache and muscle pain.

Also there are other symptoms which include recurrent fevers, arthritis, swelling of the testicles and scrotum area, swelling of the heart, neurologic symptoms, chronic fatigue, depression and swelling of the liver or spleen.

Other disease outbreaks since COVID-19

  • Hantavirus:
    • They are a family of viruses spread mainly by rodents and can cause varied disease syndromes in people worldwide. Infection with any hantavirus can produce hantavirus disease in people.
  • African Swine Fever (AFS):
    • It is a severe viral disease which  affects wild and domestic pigs typically resulting in an acute haemorrhagic fever.
    • It has a case fatality rate (CFR) of almost 100 per cent.
    • Routes of transmission : Direct contact with an infected or wild pig (alive or dead), indirect contact through ingestion of contaminated material such as food waste, feed or garbage, or through biological vectors such as ticks.
