EXTREME COLD WEATHER CLOTHING SYSTEM (ECWS)

EXTREME COLD WEATHER CLOTHING SYSTEM (ECWS)

Context:

On 27 December 2021, Dr G Satheesh Reddy, Secretary, Department of Defence R&D and Chairman Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) handed over technology for indigenous Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System (ECWS) to 05 Indian companies in New Delhi.

Key Highlights:

  • Extreme ECWS is needed by the Indian Army in its ongoing operation in the in glacier and Himalayan peaks.
  • The Army, until recently imported cold-weather clothing and a few Special Clothing and Mountaineering Equipment (SCME) equipment for troops deployed at high altitudes.

About ECWCS:

  • It is designed by DRDO.
  • It is an ergonomically designed modular technical clothing.
  • Based on the insulation required at various ambient climatic conditions in Himalayan regions, it has improved thermal insulation and physiological comfort.

Advantages of ECWCS:

  • ECWCS incorporates biological concepts related to reducing respiratory temperature and water loss, an unrestricted range of motion and rapid absorption of sweat while providing waterproof, air-proof features with adequate ventilation and advanced input and energy features required for high altitude performance.
  • The three-layer ECWCS is designed to provide thermal efficiency at a temperature of +15 to -50 ° Celsius with a variety of layers and strength of physical activity.

Significance of ECWCS:

  • Considering the widely fluctuating weather conditions on the Himalayas, the clothing offers the advantage of a few combinations to meet the required insulation or IREQ of existing climates, thus providing an alternative import mechanism for the Indian Army.
