Eye gaze controlled computer interface designed by IISc for people

A computer interface controlled by eye gaze has been designed at the Centre for Product Design and Manufacturing in the Indian Institute of Sciences based in Bengaluru.

Key Points:

  • The computer interface has been developed for individuals that have severe Speech and Motor Impairment, SMI, a condition which results from disorders like cerebral palsy.
  • The robotic arm controlled by eye-gaze can be manipulated by the movement of the eye to facilitate the use of the computer and mechanical tasks using eye gaze.
  • The interface does not involve the introduction of another medical instrument in individuals that use the system and is thus non-invasive and does not use head-mounted systems, unlike other devices.
  • The robotic arm controlled by eye gaze was tested on students with cerebral palsy of Chennai-based Vidya Sagar Institute.
  • The robotic arm can be employed for use for automotive and aeronautical applications and e-learning.

Note:

  • Cerebral palsy is present in an individual since birth and is a disorder of muscle tone, posture and movement. The disorder occurs due to abnormal development of the brain, often before the birth of the child.
