Fijian Diplomat Peter Thompson elected president of U.N General Assembly

  • Peter Thompson, the diplomat of the Lilliputian Pacific Island nation Fiji succeeded in a tough election for the chair of president of the United Nations General Assembly(UNGA).
  • Peter Thomson of Fiji marginally got an edge over Andreas Mavroyiannis of Cyprus who collected in total 94 votes as compared to 90 votes of Mavroyiannis. The post is ofgreat significance, as it has a high profile and criticalon-job roles and responsibilities.
  • Thomson pledged to devote himself for crystal clear functioning of the office of the assembly president ahead of his forerunner from 2013 for one year was tainted of charges claimed by U.S. authorities of accepting an illegal payment of $1.3 million from Chinese firm owner.
  • The president of the Assembly, MogensLykketoft of Denmark, has sought the process nominating U.N. chief just and more clear by convening meetings with candidates for the vacant.
  • The secretary-general is nominated by the 15-nation Security Council and is fully ratified by the General Assembly. Earlier this year a U.N. task force recommended new ethical rules and financial disclosures for the General Assembly presidency's office in the wake of the bribery allegations.
