Finance Minister has announced measures under Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana to help the poor tackle the pandemic

The head of the economic task force created to combat Coronavirus Pandemic, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman 26 March announced Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana(PMGKAY) to help the poor tackle difficulties caused due to economic disruption.

Key Points:

  • Under PMGKAY, 80 crore people will be covered and will include cash transfer to the poor and the migrants through Direct Benefit Transfer.
  • Under this scheme, 5kg of rice or wheat will be given to the poor in addition to what they are already getting.
  • The government will provide one Kilogram of one choice pulse for the next three months to each household and this can be availed in 2 instalments.
  • The Finance Minister has also announced medical insurance cover of Rs. 50 lakh per healthcare worker.
  • ‘Divyangs’, poor citizens and widows will get Rs. 1000 for the next three month.
  • The Government will also double collateral-free loans for 63 lakh Self Help Groups(SHGs) to Rs. 20 Lakh.
  • Families below the poverty line will get LPG Cylinders free for the next three months.
  • The government will increase the wages under MNREGA to be Rs 2,000 per worker which will benefit 5 crore families.
  • The State Governments have been directed to use the State Welfare Funds for the construction labourers.
  • The Central government will pay 12 per cent each of the Employees Provident Fund contribution of both the employer and employee, for the next three months for establishments that have up to 100 employees, with 90 per cent of them having income less than 15,000.
  • The Central government will provide the first instalment of PM-KISAN in advance.
