FIRST BRICS SHERPAS MEETING OF 2022

Context:

The first BRICS Sherpas conference of 2022 was conducted virtually on January 18-19, 2022. The two-day conference was held in China.

Key Points:

• During the meeting, both countries discussed the 2022 schedule.
• Also, they built the BRICS Calendar for 2022.
• Countries have decided to do 25 events in 2022. Of these five, it will be hosted by India.
• China will host the BRICS Young Scientist Conclave. It focuses on modern agriculture, material science, carbon peak neutralization, artificial intelligence, and bio-medicine.
• China will also host the 10th BRICS Minister of Science and Technology - level meet. At the summit, China will demonstrate the success of the BRICS Framework Program.
• The program was implemented between 2015 and 2022.

BRICS 2022 theme:

“Foster High-Quality BRICS Partnership Usher in a New Era for Global Development.”

India’s Role:

• In 2022, India will host five international events. These events will take place under the BRICS STI platform. The five events are as follows:
• Biotechnology and bio-medicine
• BRICS startups working group meeting.
• ICT and high-performance computing
• Science, Technology, Innovation and entrepreneurship partnership (STEIP) Working group meeting
• Launch of Knowledge Hub.
