First Plasma Bank of West Bengal set up at Kolkata Medical College Hospital

The state government of West Bengal has established the first plasma bank for the treatment of patients infected by COVID-19. The Plasma Bank has been established at the Kolkata Medical College and Hospital (KMCH).

Key Points:

  • The Plasma Bank was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee on 6 July 2020.
  • The bank has been built in the Immuno-hematology department for the treatment of COVID-19. Around 12 individuals in the state who have recovered from the infection have donated their plasma.
  • The bank is the first of its kind in the state and is the second initiative in the country. The first Plasma Bank was set up at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in Delhi, India.
  • The state government of West Bengal Government will make the Beliaghata Infectious Diseases hospital of Kolkata as the Centre of Excellence and will upgrade School of Tropical Medicine with the necessary infrastructure to manage the rising cases of coronavirus in the state.
  • The Chief Minister also launched the ''Jol Swapno'' scheme with an outlay of Rs.58,000 crore, under which two crore households from the rural areas will be connected with drinking water facilities in a span of five years.
