FLAG SATYAGRAHA

Context:

On 18th June, the Ministry of Culture had organised a programme to observe the Flag Satyagraha in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.

Flag Satyagraha Movement:

• It was a movement by the freedom fighters who shook the British government and it infused a new life into the freedom movement.
• It was also called the Jhanda Satyagraha, which was held in Jabalpur and Nagpur in 1923.
• The information on flag hoisting in Jabalpur spread like fire in the country and after flags were hoisted at a few places the nation over.

Importance of the Movement:

• It's anything but a mission of peaceful civil disobedience that focused on practising the right and freedom to hoist the nationalist flag and challenge the authenticity of the British Rule in India through the resistance of laws prohibiting the hoisting of nationalist flags and limiting civil freedoms.

Nationalist Leaders Involved:

• Nationalist Leaders Such as Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jamnalal Bajaj, Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari, Dr Rajendra Prasad and Vinoba Bhave coordinated the revolt and thousands of individuals from various regions headed out to Nagpur and other parts of the Central Provinces to participate in civil disobedience.

Outcomes:

• The arrest of nationalist protestors demanding the right to hoist the flag caused an outcry across India especially as Gandhi had recently been arrested.
• Eventually, the British negotiated an agreement with Patel and other Congress leaders allowing the protestors to direct their march unhindered and acquiring the release of all those arrested.
