FOURTH CONFERENCE OF THE PROTECTORS OF EMIGRANTS

Context:

On September 10, 2021, the fourth Conference of the Protectors of Emigrants was held. This date coincides with the date of the Emigration Act, 1983.

About the Conference:

• At the event, MOS Foreign Affairs, Shri V. Muraleedharan spoke and saw that India worked together to address the challenges of the covid-19 disease.
• He pointed out that this is the right time to prepare for the world’s return to normalcy.
• According to him, Protectors of Emigrants (POEs) should help the emigration of blue-collared workers and give the best possible protection and welfare.

Significance of POEs:

• POEs plays an important role in informing youth and workers about new destinations and opportunities.
• It raises awareness on the basis of the MOU signed between India and the UK on travel and cooperation; MOC between India & Japan on specified skilled workers in 14 sectors; and Approval on skilled manpower mobility between India & Portugal.
• POEs can be protected by reviewing and refining various welfare schemes like Pravasi Bharatiya Bima Yojana (PBBY), Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF), Pre-Departure Orientation Training (PDoT) and eMigrate platform.
