Fourth Edition of virtual Ministerial Climate Action held

The European Union in association with China and Canada co-chaired the fourth edition of the virtual Ministerial on Climate Action where countries exchanged views on how economic recovery plans are being aligned with the Paris Agreement for ensuring continued climate action.

Key Points:

• In the meeting, countries held discussions on the comprehensive implementation of the Paris Agreement signed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
• The meeting also demonstrated a continued political commitment by the countries towards global climate action.
• The Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Shri Prakash Javadekar represented India at the conference.
• In the meeting, deliberations were held over the need for the technological and financial support of developing countries by the developed countries.
• Under the agreement, the promised amount of USD1 trillion has not been mobilized, which was promised for strengthening the climate actions efforts of the developing countries.
• India’s achievement of 21 percent reduction in emission intensity of its GDP between 2005 and 2014 was also highlighted, which helped in achieving the pre-2020 target set by India.
• India has further achieved a renewable energy capacity of over 87 gigawatts and saw an increase of 226 percent in the past five years. The share of electricity-generation from non-fossil fuels increased from 30.5 percent in 2015 to 37.7 percent in May 2020.
• The conference was attended by the Ministers and representatives of around 30 countries virtually for the first time.
