FOURTH STATE HEALTH INDEX

Context:

On December 27, 2021, NITI Aayog released its fourth State Health Index for 2019-20.

Key Highlights:

• NITI Aayog has prepared this report in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and technical assistance from the World Bank.

Important findings:

• Kerala emerged as the best performing healthcare state for the fourth year in a row.
• Uttar Pradesh is at the bottom of the list.

• However, the report ranks UP top on the ‘incremental performance’, recording the highest  ‘incremental’ from the base year (2018-19) to the reference year (2019-20).
• However, Uttar Pradesh topped in terms of incremental performance since as it has registered the highest incremental change in the 2019-20 reference year compared to the 2018-19 base year.
• Tamil Nadu came second while Telangana came out as the third-best performer, on health parameters.
• Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra were ranked among the top five.

Worst Performing States:

• Bihar is second and Madhya Pradesh is the third-worst offender, on the health front.

Small States Performance:

• In the smaller states category, Mizoram has been the best player in overall performance and additional performance.

Performance of Union Territories:

• Among union territories, Delhi and Jammu & Kashmir are listed among the lowest in terms of overall performance, but came close to the top in terms of ‘incremental performance’.
