Details about the Bill

  • It was authored by American civil rights leader and lawmaker John Lewis.
  • It was inspired by John Lewis’s visit to India in 2009 to commemorate the 50 anniversary of Dr King’s visit to India
  • The bill seeks to establish,
    • An exchange program to study the work and legacies of Mahatma Gandhi and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.
    • A conflict resolution initiative based on the principles of nonviolence named as the Gandhi-King Global Academy.
    • A United States-India Gandhi-King Development Foundation tasked to administer the grants of  NGOs that work in health, pollution and climate change, education and empowerment of women.

Who was Martin Luther King?

  • Born January 15, 1929, in Atlanta Georgia.
  • Martin Luther King Jr. was an american activist, and leader in the African Civil Rights movement.
  • Being the son of a pastor, he was afforded opportunities for education that was not available to most black children.
  • April 4, 1968 King was assassinated.

Who was Mahatma Gandhi?

  • Born October 2, 1869 in Porbandar India, Gandhi studied law and fought for the rights of Indians in India and in South Africa.
  • He was a man of faith, and believed in the unity of all mankind.
  • He became one of the biggest political and spiritual leaders of his time.
