Ganga Yatra under Namami Gange Mission begins in Uttar Pradesh

On 27th January 2020, the five day Ganga Yatra was started in Uttar Pradeshwith an aim to create awareness about the holy river. 

Key Points:

  • CM Yogi Adityanath along with Chief Minister of Uttarakhand Trivendra Singh Rawat and Union Minister Sanjeev Baliyan flagged off the yatra from Bijnor, a place where Ganga enters Uttar Pradesh.
  • Earlier Ganga was highly polluted, but now after the works under Namami Gange Mission, one can see the clean water of the holy river even in the industrial city Kanpur.
  • This yatra aims to promote biodiversity and also to make the villages situated on the banks of the holy river more developed and prosperous.

About Namami Gange Programme

"Namami Gange Programme", is an Integrated Conservation Mission, which was approved as a 'Flagship Programme' by the Union Government in June 2014. The budget outlay was Rs. 20,000 Crore to accomplish the twin objectives of effective abatement of pollution, conservation and rejuvenation of River Ganga.
