GI TAG FOR NARASINGAPETTAI NAGASWARAM

Context

The Narasingapettai Nagaswaram has been designated as a Geographical Indication in the category of musical instruments of class 15.

Key Points

  • Narasinghapettai nagaswaram is a traditional wind instrument created in the village of Narasinghapettai near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu.
  • Tamil Nadu's Nodal Officer for GI Registration of Products applied the GI tag on behalf of Thanjavur Musical Instruments Workers Co-operative Cottage Industrial Society Limited.
  • Narasinganpettai village artisans who acquired these wooden instrument-making skills from their forefathers manufacture them using a procedure that needs specific talents.
  • The pari nagaswaram, which is longer than the thimiri, is the nagaswaram utilised by artists nowadays.

Nagaswaram's form

  • Nagaswaram artisans carefully select the wood, which is a form of ebony, ensuring that it is at least 200 years old and does not absorb moisture.
  • A little metallic cylinder is fitted into a metal staple on the top section to hold the reed mouthpiece.
  • The reeds are fashioned from the leaves of a plant called 'naanal,' which grows locally (a variety of bamboo).
  • The cylindrical body of the instrument expands out into a bell form at the bottom.
  • This shape is responsible for the nagaswaram's distinctive loudness and enticing tone. The instrument is two and a half feet in length.
  • It's a wind instrument with two reeds and a huge flared bell.

Narasinghapettai nagaswaram's manufacturing procedure

  • The aacha or Hardwickia binata tree is used to make the majority of nagaswaram in Narasinghapettai.
  • The craftspeople frequently use wood salvaged from old houses. Artisans use drilling machines and carpentry tools to make the nagaswarams that are used in festivals, weddings, and fairs, among other things.
