Glaciers in Sikkim are losing mass faster than other parts of the Himalaya

Scientists at the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology (WIHG) situated in Dehradun under the Department of Science and Technology, have found that glaciers in Sikkim are melting at a higher rate compared to other regions of Himalaya.

Key Points:

  • The response of 23 glaciers of Sikkim to climate change was analysed for the period of 1991-2015 and revealed that glaciers in Sikkim have deglaciated and retreated a lot during 1991 to 2015 period.
  • Glaciers of small sizes are retreating while larger glaciers are getting thinner due as a consequence of climate change.
  • The rise in Summer temperatures has been the primary cause of change in the glaciers.
  • A clear understanding of glacier behaviour will assist in future studies and to help in taking necessary steps.

Note:

  • WIHG situated in Dehradun is an autonomous research institute set up to the study of Geology of the Himalaya.
  • The study was published in Science of the Total Environment, which is an international peer-reviewed scientific journal about Environment Science and is published by Elsevier.
