Global Hunger Index (GHI), 2019

Global Hunger Index (GHI), 2019

The Global Hunger Index usually ranks countries on a 100-point scale, with 0 being the best score i.e., no hunger and 100 being the worst.

Key Points:

  • Values that are less than 10 reflect low hunger, values from 20 to 34.9 indicate serious hunger; values from 35 to 49.9 are alarming, and values of 50 or more are extremely alarming.
  • India has slipped down to 102nd in Global Hunger Index (GHI) of 117 nations, below Pakistan (94th), Nepal (73rd) and Bangladesh (88th).
  • The report is published by Concern Worldwide and Welthungerhilfe and the score index is calculated by the International Food Policy Research Institute.
  • It measures and tracks hunger at regional, national and global levels. The GHI is mostly based on the proportion of the country’s malnourished child population and only 9.6% of children (6-23 months) were fed with a minimum acceptable diet.
  • The GHI scores are usually based on a formula that captures 3 dimensions of hunger—child mortality, insufficient caloric intake and child undernutrition using 4 component indicators:

1. CHILD STUNTING: the share of children under the age of five who are stunted (low height-for-age), reflecting chronic undernutrition.

2. CHILD MORTALITY: the mortality rate of children under the age of 5.

3. UNDERNOURISHMENT: the share of the population that is under-nourished, reflecting insufficient caloric intake

4. CHILD WASTING: the share of children under the age of five who are wasted (low weight-for-height), reflecting acute undernutrition.
