GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO REDUCE LAND DEGRADATION AND CORAL REEF PROGRAM LAUNCHED

Context

Recently, a  Global Initiative to reduce Land Degradation and Coral Reef program was launched at G20 Environment Ministers Meet.

About Global Initiative on Reducing Land Degradation

  • It aims to strengthen the implementation of existing frameworks which would  prevent, halt, and reverse land degradation within G20 member states and globally.
  • It also takes into account the possible implications on the achievement of other Sustainable Development Goals( SDGs).

About Sustainable Development Goals

  • These are a collection of 17 global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all".
  • These goals were set in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and intended to be achieved by the year 2030, are part of a UN Resolution called "The 2030 Agenda".

About land degradation

This is mainly caused by multiple forces, which include extreme weather conditions particularly drought, and human activities that pollute or degrade the quality of soils and land utility negatively affecting food production, livelihoods, and the production and provision of other ecosystem goods and services.

About Global Coral Reef R&D Accelerator Platform

  • It is an innovative action-oriented initiative aimed to create a global research and development (R&D) program to advance research, innovation and capacity building in all facets of coral reef conservation, restoration, and adaptation, and strengthen ongoing efforts and commitments made to enhance coral reefs conservation and their further degradation.

About Coral Reef

  • They are large underwater structures composed of the skeletons of coral, which are marine invertebrate animals.
  • Reefs are formed of colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, whose polyps cluster in groups.

Coral Reefs in India

They are mainly restricted to the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Gulf of Mannar, Gulf of Kutch, Palk Strait and the Lakshadweep islands.
