‘GLOBAL STATUS REPORT ON THE PUBLIC HEALTH RESPONSE TO DEMENTIA’ BY WHO

Context:

Recently, the WHO (World Health Organization) released a report on the ‘Global Status Report on the public health response to dementia’.

Key Points of the Report:

  • According to WHO, Dementia impacts not just the person with the disease, but the whole family. Sadly, the world is failing to address dementia challenge.
  • According to WHO estimates, at present, more than 55 million people (8.1% of women and 5.4% of men over 65 years) are living with dementia worldwide.
  • The number of people living with dementia is growing and it is estimated to rise to 78 million by 2030 and to 139 million by 2050.
  • Further, the WHO projected the global cost of dementia to increase to US$ 1.7 trillion by 2030, or US$ 2.8 trillion if corrected for increases in care costs. In 2019, the cost was estimated to be US$ 1.3 trillion.

About Dementia:

  • The syndrome - often a chronic or ongoing condition - leads to a deterioration of mental functioning (e.g. the ability to process thought) in addition to what can be expected from the normal effects of natural ageing.
  • It affects memory, thinking, posture, comprehension, counting, reading ability, language, and judgment.

Symptoms:

  • Loss of memory, Difficulty thinking, visual acuity, self-control, problem-solving or language and the ability to focus and concentrate.
  • Personality changes, such as depression, anxiety, depression, and mood swings.

Causes:

  • When brain cells are damaged, dementia can occur. It can be caused by a head injury, a stroke, a brain tumour or as a result of an HIV infection.

Treatment:

  • There is currently no treatment available for treating dementia, although many therapies are being investigated at various stages of clinical trials.
