GOVT ALLOWS ALL OCI AND PIO CARD HOLDERS TO VISIT INDIA FOR ANY PURPOSE, EXCEPT ON TOURIST VISA

Context

The government decided to permit all OCI and PIO cardholders and all other foreign nationals intending to visit India for any purpose, except on a Tourist Visa to enter by air or water routes through authorized airports and seaport immigration check posts.

Details

  • Under this graded relaxation, Government of India has also decided to restore with immediate effect all existing visas (except electronic visa, Tourist Visa and Medical Visa).
  • Foreign nationals intending to visit India for medical treatment can apply for a Medical Visa including for their medical attendants.
  • The PIO Card programme came into effect on September 15, 2002. On January 15, 2015, the Person of Indian Origin card scheme was withdrawn by the Government of India and it was merged with the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card scheme. Currently, all the PIO cards are treated as OCI cards.

A person registered as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Cardholder under the Citizenship Act, 1955.

About Person of Indian Origin (PIO)

A person who or whose any of ancestors was an Indian national and who is presently holding another country’s citizenship/nationality i.e. he/she is holding a foreign passport.
