Govt plans 'One Health' to check antibiotics use in animals, humans

With the growing use of antibiotics in feed supplements of livestock and poultry, Indian government has launched One Health initiative to regulate the use of antibiotics.

Under One Health, Department of Biotechnology and Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) will launch a compulsory national immunization program for livestock.

According to an estimate; antibiotic used in cattle, poultry and swine indicate that India used 3% of global consumption. It is expected that the use of antibiotics will double by 2030.

The latest report of World Organisation for Animal Health shows that 45 countries use antimicrobial for growth promotion in the livestock.

Why it is important?

It is predicted that antimicrobial resistance will be a greater cause of human death than cancer by 2050.

The overuse of antibiotics in food-producing animals is being blamed for the increase in resistant bacteria, also known as "superbugs."

When these are passed to humans they can cause serious illness.

Thus, there is a need of strict government legalization so antibiotics given to an animal doesn’t enter our food supply.
