Greece and Macedonia Prime Ministers nominated 2019 Nobel Peace Prize

The Prime ministers of Macedonia and Greece, Zoran Zaev and Alexis Tsipras, are nominated for the 2019 Nobel Peace Prize for signing the Prespa Agreement between the two countries.

Prespa Agreement

For almost three decades, Greece and Macedonia were on bad terms due to naming of Macedonia and its aspiration to join NATO.

However, three months back, both countries’ prime minister signed an agreement and the new name of Macedonia will be Republic of North Macedonia.

Why Macedonia name is disputed?

Greece also has a province called Macedonia.

After the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1991, the new neighboring country also named itself as Macedonia.

The new country Macedonia sometimes depicted the map which included the Greek province Macedonia. It provoked a fear in Greek government that after sometime they would start demanding the unification of Greek’s Macedonia with the newly emerged country Macedonia.

So, the bitter dispute over the name of Macedonia between the two countries started in 1994 and lasted till this year.
