Guinness World Record set by India's 2018 Tiger census for being the largest camera trap wildlife survey

A Guinness World Record has been set by the fourth cycle of the All India Tiger Estimation 2018 as it was the world’s largest camera trap wildlife survey.

Key Points:

  • The number of tigers in India is estimated to be 2967 tigers according to the latest census.
  • Currently, India has 75 percent of the tiger population across the globe and has achieved its objective of doubling tiger numbers that were set in St. Petersburg in 2010 before the set target of 2022.
  • The fourth edition of the survey was the most comprehensive survey in terms of data collection and resources.
  • The survey involved the placement of Camera traps in 26,838 locations in 141 sites under which an effective area of 1 lakh 21 thousand 337 square kilometres was surveyed.
  • The survey led to the identification of 2,461 individual tigers by the use of stripe-pattern-recognition software and overall estimated tigers in India are 2967.
  • The estimation of tigers across India is guided by the National Tiger Conservation Authority with technical guidance from the Wildlife Institute of India and is executed by the State Forest Departments and partners.
