Herbal medicine loaded smart bandage developed by IASST scientists

A pH-responsive smart bandage has been developed by scientists working at the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), an autonomous institute of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India.

Key Points:

  • The herbal bandage has the capability to deliver the medicine applied in the wound at the pH that is best-suited for the wound.
  • The development of the delivery system is based on a fabricated nanotechnology-based cotton patch that utilizes cost-effective and sustainable items like jute and cotton.
  • In the research, the drug release was carried out by a nanocomposite hydrogel bound compact cotton patch incorporated with jute carbon dots.
  • The use of jute has been made for the first time as an antecedent to synthesize fluorescent carbon dots. Water was used as the dispersion medium in the research.
  • The model drug in the study was the Herbal formulation of neem leaf (Azadirachtaindica) extract.
  • The carbon dots of jute were immobilized in the hydrogel matrix-bound cotton patch, which was effective in exemplifying the various types of drug release pattern at pH lower than pH five and at higher at pH 7.
  • The hybrid cotton patch showing stimuli-responsive behaviour has laid the foundation for using the bandage as smart wound-dressing or bandage material.
