Human Development Index

Human Development Index

India climbed one spot to 129 among 189 countries in the 2019 Human Development Index (HDI), according to a report by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Key Points:

  • In India, 27.1 crore people were lifted out of poverty from 2005-06 to 2015-16.
  • India had ranked 130 last year. The steady progress was due to nearly three decades of rapid development, which had seen a dramatic reduction in absolute poverty, along with gains in life expectancy, education, and access to health care.

Facts:

  • In 1990 the first Human Development Report was introduced with a new approach for advancing human wellbeing.
  • Human development – or the human development approach - is about expanding the richness of human life, rather than simply the richness of the economy in which human beings live. It is an approach that is focused on people and their opportunities and choices.

What is HDI?

The Human Development Index (HDI) is a statistical tool used to measure a country's overall achievement in its social and economic dimensions. The social and economic dimensions of a country are based on the health of people, their level of educational attainment and their standard of living.
