IAMAI report shows more rural Internet users than Urban

According to the ‘Digital in India’ report by the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI), the number of Internet users in rural areas has exceeded the number of users in urban areas for the first time.

Key Points:

  • In November 2019, Urban areas had 205 million active users, and the rural regions had 227 million active internet users, which is 10 percent more than the urban users.
  • The total number of active internet users is 504 million.
  • According to the report, the number of daily active users increased by 30 million since March 2019.
  • The report suggests that Urban Internet Users spend more time on the internet in comparison to rural areas.
  • Approximately 70 percent of the active internet users in India are daily users, and of these, 9 out of 10 access the internet at least once a week in urban India.
  • The main reason behind the increase in the number of India’s internet users is accessibility to affordable devices and cheap data plans.
  • In the Urban and Rural areas, mobile was the preferred device for accessing the internet.
  • The report underscored the increase in female internet users (26 million) was more than that of male internet users. The increase was by 21 percent, which is much higher than the 9 percent increase in male internet users.
