IMD Foundation Day

The India Meteorological Department-IMD celebrated its 145th Foundation Day on 15th January 2020. It began in 1875, and since then it has marched forward with various milestones and paradigms to serve the society.

Key Points:

  • WMO recognized five observatories of IMD - Chennai (Nungambakkam), Mumbai (Colaba), Panjim, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram as a long term observing station for more than 100 years.
  • It has earned global applause for its accurate prediction of Cyclone Fani. 
  • Significant improvement in forecast accuracy of severe weather events by 15 to 35% during the last 5 years.
  • New website for the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi has been launched during 2019.

About IMD:

  • This is the principle agency of GoI which makes weather forecasts, meteorological observations and seismological observations. 
  • It is headquartered in Delhi.
  • It operates an observatory station in India and in Antarctica. The major IMD centres are located in Guwahati, Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, New Delhi.
