Independent Panel for the evaluation of global COVID-19 response initiated by WHO

The Director-General of World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has announced the begining of the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPR) on 9 July 2020 for the assessment of the global COVID-19 response.

Key Points:

  • The panel will be co-chaired by the former President of Liberia Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who has also been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and the former Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Clark, who is the head of United Nations Development Programme.
  • The chairpersons will choose the panel members along with the members of the independent secretariat working independently.
  • A landmark resolution was adopted by the member states of the UN at the 73rd World Health Assembly in May 2020 to start a comprehensive and independent assessment of the learning from the global health response to COVID-19.
  • The panel will meet in a Special Session of the Executive Board that will discuss the progress of the panel in September, and an interim report will be published in November when the World Health Assembly resumes functioning.
  • A substantive report on the matter will be given by the panel to the World Health Assembly in May 2021.
