China has sent a total of 650,000 kits from Guangzhou airport to India on 16 April 2020. The test kits include RNA Extraction Kits and Rapid Antibody Tests. The rapid testing kits will be used in COVID19 hotspots and regions with high infection rates.

Key Points:

  • India has bought 550,000 Rapid Antibody testing kits and 100,000 RNA extraction kits from China.
  • India is importing the COVID-19 testing kits from countries like Germany, Korea, Israel and France.
  • The Ministry of External Affairs is sourcing several medical supplies, personal protective equipment etc. from various countries to meet the demands and is coordinating with many countries to overcome the crisis caused due to the pandemic.
  • The Rapid Antibody tests are being bought since they are faster than the Polymerase Chain Reaction(PCR) tests and take 15 to 30 minutes to generate the results.
  • In the Rapid Antibody Test, the finger of the individual is cleaned with an alcohol swab, and a lancet is used for pricking the finger to collect the blood sample for the test. The test examines the presence of IgM and IgG antibodies.
