India is all set to begin the antibody tests for the coronavirus

India will soon start antibody tests to confirm whether an individual was earlier infected with the virus or not. This will help in understanding the distribution, occurrence time and ways to control COVID19.

Key Points:

  • The test that will be conducted by India will be a serological test and will look for antibodies in the blood. All serological tests focus on the immune system of the individual.
  • The test is different from the current tests that determine the presence of active infection based on the nasal or throat swabs.
  • The test will determine the presence of antibodies that will give an idea of whether the individual had been exposed to the virus or not and is not a confirmatory test.
  • The tests will provide a rough idea on the number of people that might have been exposed to the virus.
  • On the other hand tests conducted by Indian Council Medical Research(ICMR) on random samples show no signs of community transmission, however, the chances of India entering into a community transmission stage cannot be ruled out.
